sub sonic project

Thinking of doing a sub sonic rifle and wodering which case to use:

1. 300/221 Whisper

2. 7.62 x 39mm

3. 30BR

I know there is lot of data for the Whisper but I wanted a little more versatility and I thought maybe the other 2 would do it . That is running the bullet above the 1000 FPS mark. Anyone have opinion or experience with these?

You answered your own question.

The government has spent millions of dollars on subsonic technology.

A 240 Sierra, 30 caliber out of a suppressed 300 Whisper is as good as it gets.

It can be shot out of bolt gun or gas gun.

The firing pin strice is the loudest part.

Very accurate and effective to 200 yards.

i think by versatility he means more velocity to go along with the subsonic capabilities. i would stay with the 300 whisper, I dont know if the other 2 options would be optimal for sub 1035 fps. (isn't it funny how much money our government spends on things that take the common man minutes to figure out)

Nate,
Just posing a question here, but if I already have a .473 bolt-face bolt rifle sitting around. Why wouldn’t I just use the 30BR?
Thanks,
Lloyd

For what it's worth a buddy of mine built a whisper and loved it. Super accurate and super quiet. What action are you building it on? I've got a Remington 700 .223 bolt laying around if you need one.

I just built a 300/221 and it is very accurate. Remington action with a douglas 7 twist barrel. I get 3/4" group EASY at 100 yards with Bergers 210 VLD shooting it at 1050fps. I am going this weekend to test it out on deer. If I want to shoot fast, I hear the 125 grain noslers at 2500 fps are incredible. I have not gone that far yet.

If it were me, I would get a second bolt, and go with the whisper (300/221)

I think I have it narrowed to 300/221 I got a barrel threaded for Savage action and the 30 BR..I have some 6mmBR Lapua brass. I have forming dies for the 221 FB so I think I will play around with the 300/221 first and if I don't like it I will go to the 30BR

P1 Zombie has the answer. Just load up the 300-221 with lighter bullets. The problem I saw with the whisper was that at 1000 fps and a 200gr projectile you get no expansion. The other problem is that between 75yds and 125yds you better be using a range finder because it drops like a rock and you will miss your mark. I honestly think that for close range work out to about 75yds you would be better off with a 45 acp reasonable trajectory and I'd imagine better expansion. Does it have enough KE for deer sized game? Nope, not in my opinion. Not from what I saw.
