sub sonic 308 winchester

anybody got any load data for sub sonic 308 Winchester?? got a new can and want to test her out, I have plenty of brass and bullets just need some powder ideas for 165g gamekings.

any suggestions appreciated!!!

You can do load work up for unfamiliar bullets in subsonic applications doing your load work up backwords. Start high/supersonic and work down to consistent subsonic velocity. I like trailboss powder and can get great accuracy with some bullets. I Like to start at 14grns and work down in .3grn increments. Keep in mind it fouls the barrel badly and you'll need to run a swab/patch through every 20 rounds or so depending on your taste. Dirty enough bore creates opportunity for a stuck bullet so keep an eye on velocities when doing your work up and note when fouling starts to affect velocity.

308 win in a 16" 8twist 5 groove krieger. I got a good deal on it and made up my mind to do a supersonic/subsonic build. Turned out great. Almost done load work up for subs and next I'm going to work up a load with 185 jugernaughts for supersonic.

150gr SPT Sierra, 9gr IMR TrailBoss and grouped ridiculously well out to 75 yds. I tried some of the 165s and they didn't work. Sierra techs informed me to stay with 125-150gr, preferably flat base and they nailed it. They're very fun to shoot.

I started at 7.5 and worked down to 5 grains of clays with 155's,... got what I wanted at 5 grains with an fd210 and military case in an 11.5" 8twist 308 win. Works as intended, decent accuracy. Might get funny in a long barrel, not certain.

This recipe works for me too.

I called Hodgdon and they gave me two loads over the phone. One with Trailboss the other with Tightgroup. Took no longer than it took you to write and ask this question here.

Good Luck

DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU VALUE YOUR FACE!

For people unfamiliar with subsonic and the correct powders that is a recipe for disaster. You cannot just take a standard load and start working backwards without courting a blown up action and face. Standard load powders reach a point where you have a "detonation" and they will blow up the action.

Call the mftrs/powder companies and they will give you good starting loads with their bullets and correct powders for subsonic workups.

Thanks for pointing that out. It slipped past me that it should be mentioned that this is for use when you have an established safe starting point with a powder applicable for subsonic use.

I seem to recall that Lapua makes some bullets just for subsonic loads in a 30 cal.

And if 30s are any thing like 45-70s you want to shoot the biggest heaviest, best BC you can get if you want to shoot more than 100 yards. Just for giggles I just popped a 175SMK into JBM at 1200FPS with a 100 yard zero.

Drops 27" to 200 yards and 52" to 250.

If you've never shot low velocity bullets you are in for a surprise when you see how much elevation you need for what used to be hold center and shoot.

Trail boss is probably going to work for you. It's designed for the guys shooting old black powder cartridges to be able to get good case fill.
