Stupid, Unlucky or All of the Above?

Was told my new Stolle 6 Dasher would not be ready for months. So, with new Krieger barrel on my Savage action I go out and work all day yesterday. Found the right seating depth (.014"), right tuner setting and made numerous nickel or smaller sized groups at 200 yards.

This is at a private range I begged permission to use. Set up a portable press and did my loading work right at the range and all by myself. At just 302 rounds through the barrel I got it and got it right for next week's shoot.

Drove home contented after lots of work and effort. Gunsmith calls. The new rifle is done early. I'm supposed to pick it up today. :'(

This new one is using a glue-in short-range stock. I hate that and have not had time to figure out if it will work, I can modify or order a new stock to fit. Then, I have yet to try the 20 MOA base or even test the trigger. Now today I get to tear off my scope, remove the tuner and be ready to use them on the new rifle.

Stupid or unlucky or both??? All that testing for nothing but the experience. Now, as an aside, someone may be able to buy my Savage and benefit from all that testing of the new barrel.

I feel like a loser with only a week to get the new one ready for the shoot. Am I right?

Well Dusty, I won't shoot without the tuner or at least a brake.

Only shoot 600 and 1,000 yard shoots. Friends literally demand I use a tuner just like them. Others want nothing to do with the tuners. Really would just like to use a brake but that means another $200 to fit a tuner for this new barrel and they cannot be re-used on other barrels. They have to be contoured for each and every barrel to look reasonable and fit right.

Without the brake or a tuner-brake you cannot see where you hit on the gong.

The tuner-brakes are so much larger that you can just take one off a barrel and use it on the other. I have a brake for this Krieger barrel. I do not have one for the new Bartline bbl. on the Stolle. To get one made is kind of a waste although I already paid to have that barrel threaded. I can just use the old tuner-brake.

Unlike so many here, I do not have enough interest to just throw money into this sport. Like to hunt, fish and ride motorcycle. That takes much of my time and money also. Already cost me $1,800 for this new Stolle build with all the chambering, threading and fitting that had to be done. Going to use the old scope, a new 20 MOA base I bought from a guy here and the old rings.

One of the rifles will be sold soon. If the new one does not work it will go and then me and that Savage will ride into the sunset still shooting good.

And to think this all started because I just wanted a better trigger.

Appreciate the thoughts.

Why, if you hate them, did you order the new gun with the glue in short range stock one? Just curious.

Larry ditch the tuner/brake or brake. The guns shoot smaller without them. Go with a flat 0 degree crown at 28". The panda probably will not balance right in that stock. I'd look for an MBR style stock. I know Dana had a used one laying around you may be able to get a deal on. The PRT "tear drop" is also a good one. The tuner brake always has and always will be a sales gimmick, I have talked to alot of guys who have tried them way before they were seen at Manatee and theres a reason they have not caught on. My favorite 1000yd action is the Panda, it will out shoot all others if everything else is right.

Alex - Interesting.

I have never met Dana. He doesn't come to the club. Don't know where his shop or house is. Did not know but assume, from your help, he sells stuff for BR. Have no contact information though there might still be a sign at the club. After I see this thing later today I may have to contact him in the near future.

Do think this rifle will not be as good as my old one just because of the stock. I also did NOT know it was a "glue-in" until last night. With no experience on that issue and never having really seen one that I noted was glued, I was and still am clueless. Can't believe an action is built without screws and a recoil lug.

Going to pick it up tonight. Watch it have so much front weight with that 30' bbl it tips forward and falls out of that stock.

I like tuning without the tuner. Always just loaded different charges and tested until I found the best. Then refined with seating depth. Will not shoot gong without a brake. Too much jump to enjoy the shot and get instant feedback. Have a 22-250AI on a super 40X that is near worthless to me as I never put a brake on it. Serious-shooting rifle that, on prairie dog, you can rarely watch the impact.

On paper it does not matter. On the gongs, watching the impact is what it's all about. It's like my "varmint fix" because there's no varmint hunting here in Florida.

The more I reflect on yesterday and lately, I'm leaning towards "stupid".

Shoot the Savage. You have it ready to go and won't have time to do the same with the Panda. Long term, you will move to the Panda, but no need to drop what you already know works. Don't stress over the glue in. It's only because you are unfamiliar with the concept. If the previous owner was able to handle it with a 30" barrel, you can probably be confident you will as well. Give it a try before you spend more bucks on a long range stock. Glue in's are easily removed and easily put back together, they just take a bit longer than action screws. I have both and probably prefer the glue in. For now, go win with the Savage.

Picked it up today. Surprised it does not seem hampered by that stock. I measured and compared to the old Savage stock it is only an inch shorter from trigger to frowned. Butt, though different, is the same13 1/2".

Wanted q lighter trigger. 1/2 oz. I mean my first touch was a dry fire. My light trigger gauge goes to 8 oz. This thing tripped before the 1 oz. point each time I tried. Slammed the belt shut without trouble. The trouble will come when I try to shoot that trigger. Hope it's adjustable without taking it out of the stock. I need at least 2-4 oz to feel my the skin touching the metal trigger.

Going to try Monday and see if it will shoot. Join us Saturday and beat the heck out of me. I'll be the one struggling with something. It's a guarantee.

Please, please, please.....don't change the trigger...change yourself. The 1oz is exactly what you want, you just don't know it yet.

Appreciate the trigger thoughts. My finger skin could just barely feel it when I touched the metal trigger. Then it went off.

Made the adjustment. It is now just a tin bit under 2 oz. I have shot the rifle 4 times in the backyard and cleaned extensively after each shot. I can now feel my skin touch the trigger and then can feel it when I start to add pressure. The shot goes off a surprise on that pressure.

Had to get a feel. My fingers did not do that -1 oz.

Kelbly sure has a nice trigger on that Stolle.

Larry, that action may have screw threads. You'll have to pop it out. A little heat will do it. If it does not it is a very simple job for some one to do. Shoot it first to see if you like it, I dont care for the drop in the butt stock.

Checked out the site Alex. Now I know. Next step is in the morning. Barrel broken in here at the house. Now I have all my portable loading stuff packed and ready to go to a private range and at least give it a "shot".

It's one gun or the other unless I buy another Nightforce scope. Really don't need two target rifles to shoot one at a time anyhow.
