stuck case

So I decided to reload a round I haven't done for a few years. .257ai.... I had a box of 20 that had been cycled through the gun about 3 times. At the 9th piece of brass, I get a stuck case in the FL sizing die. I extract, and clean the die thinking too much lube. I try another and end up with stuck case. Hummm....... Ok get the polishing compound out and polish the die, clean and de-grease. result, another stuck piece of brass. Keep in mind, the locking ring has not moved in the forester press. Try another piece of brass, guess what..... gets stuck.... [censored]!!! This is fireformed brass and am starting to get a little hot under the collar I try another but do not fully extend the ram and find that I am able to size about a third of the neck without getting stuck .

Kinda lost on this one...... All brass came from the same barrel and no changes were made to the die ???

Sounds like too little lube rather than too much. What are you using on your cases? I use imperial size wax for most, but RCBS lube or even Hornady one shot (if you get enough on it) works. make sure you get the lube all the way down the case body. If you degreased the die, you might also want to prelube the die with some lite oil like ballistol or similar, that should get you moving again.

Using RCBS spray on a pad. Place the brass on the pad and give it a roll


The shoulder is not making contact with the die. I can physically feel the point on the neck, about a third of the way, where it is getting stuck.

Samual, I have found at times the spray on lube to be kinda grabby when cycling a case through a re-sizing die. Fix usually is the old squeeze lube type rcbs gel.

I quit trying different case lubes when I purchased Imperial wax. Messy but, it works just great.

Samuel, I've got a 257AI also. Suggest you pre-lube the die with the RCBS spray....... The .257AI is ALMOST a straight walled case, the shoulder tends to bulldoze the lube off the walls of the die. An occasional spray into the die should keep you in business........... If you have some Ammonia based bore cleaner apply a little with a Q-tip to the inside of the die. Wait a minute or two and swab it with clean mop or paper towel. If you get blue coloring you haven't gotten out all the brass that could be smeared on the inside of the die.

Wipe the necks to remove carbon.

Use some chap stick in a pinch. If it works you will like the imperial or lee sizing butter.

My buddy used to have this same issue with other cases periodically. He got rid of the pad, went to Imperial Die Sizing Wax, no more sticking.

When you roll the case body on the pad are you getting any lube on the neck? If not, place a light coating on the neck with your fingers. You said the neck was the sticking point.

I had the same experiance with 30-06 yesterday and rcbs spray. I decided i wasnt coating them well enough after rough sizing turned into me driving out a ruined case with a punch.

Are you sure you've got the right shell holder in your ram? jd

I use a forester co ax press so the shell holder is not a issue
