Struggle with slow twist 6BR

Suggest with 500 rounds, you scope the barrel for carbon build up. If you have carbon, scrub it out with a bronze brush. Run a patch of solvent and let it soak for 2 hours and scrub with bronze brush, then wipe out with clean patch. Repeat until barrel is clean. This will take awhile! Isso will shorten this time process.

With out wind flags you are just guessing, I would get them, before you wear out the barrel and you still don't know a thing. You have to eliminate variables wind is the big one...... 1 mph. wind will get you..... jim

1) I did try 8208 XBR briefly. may have to give it a go again
2) i have a borescope and monitor carbon/copper build up and clean as needed
3) i need to get more wind flags i guess. i only have one now which i have been using every time.

Trued Remington 700 Action, firing pin bushed.
Bartlein 23 inch, 4 groove 1 in 14 twist barrel, .045" freebore
Shehane/McMillan ST-1000F fiberglass stock, Pillar/glass bedded
Jewel 2oz trigger
Sightron 10-50x glass (Weaver scope on rifle in the pic was replaced with the Sightron)

i also got a new Protektor DR rear bag specific to this stock (not shown)

I really hope you get it nailed . One thing I don't use or like anymore is your scope mounts and rings . I've had too much stress with the 2 piece Redfield style bases with only the front ring doing anything . There ok for a hunting rig , sort of .

thanks, i no longer use the two piece base, the pic is the way i purchased the rifle but immediately changed out to a one piece base, and now use a Sightron 10-50x 56 scope

i shot a couple of good groups with the Berger 64.2 Columns with 34.2 grs of Varget. went out the next time with the same load in virtually the same conditions and went to crap

Straight 6BR, I'm shooting the columns with 31g Varget, 5 thou off the lands. Works well for me. In truth, you could probably tune it a bit better than the 31 load, but I like having a single load rather than a warm weather load plus a cold weather load (caveat: I'm in the SF Bay Area, so "warm" and "cold" have different meanings than others.)

quick update on this project.

been a long struggle for consistency with this rifle. i have been using wind flags, and have stuck with Benchmark and Berger 64.2 gr Column bullets. Benchmark has been the most consistent powder. i have gone back and forth between 31.0 and 31.8 grs. tried .030" off the lands to .015" in. had it out today in very, very light winds and had flags in use. seating depths were .003" and .005" into the lands. this seems to be the ticket with 31.6 grs of Benchmark. this is the best this rifle has agged since it was built. barrel has over 1550 rds now, borescope looks excellent, and the funny thing, the lands have not eroded at all! i keep checking the overall length with the Berger Columns, and the distance to the rifling remains unchanged since the barrel was new. same lot of bullets as well. kinda surprising

I don’t recommend Iosso and a brush. Depending on how aggressive you are you will damage the bore of the barrel.

Any abrasive and a brush and your asking for trouble.

Use a patch and JB Bore compound (not the bore brite). Again no brush. Or Rem. 40x cleaner and a patch.

Since we're just sharing opinions here, I'll make a couple of observations. You were advised several times to use wind flags. Nice to see that you have.
Also, it has been mentioned that calm days are not the best time to shoot. In fact, those who compete regularly in short range benchrest can tell you that no wind days can produce some very erratic results, even with dedicated and very accurate benchrest rifles. After reading this entire project my observation is that the inconsistent results have not been from powder or bullets, but rather from erratic wind that you could not see. What you have described today is possibly the best condition to shoot for precision, light wind with flags in place. Also, one flag at 100 yards, is better than none, but not by much. It is likely that virtually all the bullets you tried and several of the powders will shoot equally as well as what you have settled on. Good luck moving forward. When you screw on the next barrel I suggest you use several wind flags from the beginning rather than late in barrel life. You've burned through a barrel and a lot of components. This could probably have been avoided with a few flags. The air is NEVER still for long.

appreciate the input.

i have burned through a barrel and a bunch of components, and using flags is something i will continue to do in the future. however, i have had a lot of fun up to this point, and since i have more money than sense, thats ok.

anyone know how much LT-32 can you get in a 6BR case that works with the 64- 68 class of bullets? freebore is .045". Western powders says 29.6 max (68 gr bullets) , that charge did not work for me. there is a node at around 28.8 but it has been inconsistent. i have been struggling to get my 14 twist 6BR barrel to shoot consistently with Lt-32 and H322. i am in Florida in the heat.

I use 8208, Varget and RE15. 8208 my favorite. It's an accurate GH hunting rifle.
