Stripping paint from a McMillan stock?

I have a McMillan stock that is painted base coat/clear coat. How would you go about stripping the paint and not mess up the gel coat? It’s a swirl McMillan pattern under the paint that I really like. I will re-clear it once I get all the paint removed.
Thanks for any tips

Sand paper.
Problem is it's hard to control how much your taking off in a given area, which means you'll get into the gel coat a bit and very possibly see the glass mesh.
You'll probably also run into some kind of body filler. I yet to paint a McMillan stock that was straight without making it that way myself.

I do paint and body work for my real job. We are slow right now, thinking about taking it to work tomorrow start with 360 and go finer as I start seeing primer. If it don’t work out I’ll just re paint it. This swirl just looks rad, what I can see of it anyhow.

You wont hurt the gelcoat with chemicals. Sounds like youll know what to do with the chemical soaked filler youll encounter. If its been painted right youll never get back to the original marble look- and once you do youll see why they painted it in the first place. In your body shop you should do your own marble and make it exciting and not mainstream. Use marbelizer and a unique marble texture- saran wrap has been done plenty. Lets see what you can come up with- dont go backwards, itll take 10x as long to get a quarter of the excitement

I do love custom paint but, it is very very easy to chip it up shooting 20 plus matches a year. Hauling guns up and down the east coast, even a rest stop will chip paint if you’re not careful. That’s the main reason I’d like to use the original gel coat.

Yeah I’ve seen some chip from some weird things. The barrel channel edges is another easy place for a chip. I am pretty careful with my guns but it happens. The Gun safe is worlds worst and easiest place to chip one.

Once the matches started cancelling mine hasn't seen a lot of daylight. I'm much more careful with it than I used to be though.

I'm polishing a candy kestros now, and my model is out of hibernation!
