Stripped Action Screw Hole

I have a basic Rem 700 action that has the front action screw stripped out bad. Not sure how this happened because I bought it at a gun show as a project. What do you all feel would be the best fix?

Drill it out and fit it with a thread repair kit?
Drill and tap for over sized bolt?
Any other options?

Without seeing it...hard to say for sure. The most common cause for this is a gap toothed, inbred, hillbilly cranking in a 1/4-20 screw in the 1/4-28 threads. If that's the case, there's a chance it can be salvaged to 1/4-28 again.

Note: a gap toothed, inbred, hillbilly is a different species from the equally dangereous 'cornfield commando'. Though seperate in their respective genus, both can often be seen intermingling at gun shows. Their plumage is different (camo versus all black) but blended plumage is being seen more often as the two often species are often accompanied by their cousin-wives. These 'cousin-wives' are not to be confused with the common 'trophy wife'. In their culture, 'trophy wife' status is obtained only when the object is a step sister from your maternal step grandfather. It's the double step that elevates the status.

LMAO

I always thought the trophy wife status of this species was determined by the size of the rack and the total dressed weight. Learn something new everyday.
Walt, diet is a big determiner. A corn/soybean mix common up here the Forbidden Zone compared to a Mt. Dew/nicotine/methamphetamine mix will certainly yield different results. Local access to a good body garage is a must.

More'n likely was a highly over educated Yankee, who having read the latest gun magazine article on action screw torque necessary in today's world -- but didn't know the difference between inch & foot pounds.

No shortage of those either. I had to fix this one for a friend who thought it was a good idea to torque the action screws but didn't savvy the whole lbs/inch and lbs/foot thing. ;) Fortunately, the screw heads rolled over. I converted both to a button head screw.

Being from South Dakota, we're neither Northerners or Southerners. The worst you can call us is 'dirt clods' which isn't (ain't?) far from the truth.

Jim, after all, it  was Saturday night...date night. The mind reels with the thought.

And congrats on your win yesterday!!!
Jim beat the rest of us like red headed step children! ! 11 points clear of 2nd and 3rd, otherwise known as first and second loser. It was especially appropriate in this case. Please stay in Pittsburgh next month or give us a warning you’re showing up for Pete’s sake!

Whoa! I resemble that comment…other than the highly educated part!

Unless you’ve been there/done that you have no idea how true this is! I must say my first sojourn south of the Mason-Dixon Line was an eye opener for this Left Coast boy. Luckily my best friend lived in Lilburn Ga. so I had a guide.
