Straight BR or derivative.

Hi,

I’m about to start a new build, I’ve decided on a 6BR of some description but I’m unsure if just to go straight BR or one of the improved versions.
It‘s going to be a bit of a do it all rifle, steel targets, small deer and fox. Something for my son to have a go with as well.
I‘m going with a Zermatt TL3 action, 24in barrel in a Manners stock. I’m in the UK and can currently get hold of Lapua 6BR brass fairly easily and also the Alpha options at a price!
What would you guys go with? Straight BR or…

Thanks

Jon

I have, or had till just recently both the 6BR and the BRA. The straight BR IS the easy button. Sold the 6BR because it was my favorite and preferred caliber. Hard decision for me. Figured if I can let that go, the others will be easier to part with. Go straight, you won't regret it.

If your situation is under say 3 to 400 meters, you will be very well served by the 6mm br. The only practical reason for the improved options is extended range and pushing the really heavy bullets.

I have a 6BR and a 6BRX for varmint hunting. The 6BRX and 6BRA have fps like the dashher. The 6BRX and 6BRA shoot 60 gr bullets about 150 fps faster than the 6BR without pushing the limits. You might get better barrel life with the 6BR. I have 4200 shots on mine and it still shoots under 1/2". All three are capable of very good accuracy. I forget how they FF the 6BRA. The 6BRX you just load them and shoot. I jam the bullets about 10 thou to get the case head against the bolt face. They shoot good groups fire forming. I shoot a 14 twist for light bullets and varmint hunting. A 12 twist would be better for 75-85 gr bullets. They probably use a 9.5 twist for 105-108 gr bullets. Don't take my word for these numbers. Consult the bullet makers advise.

From my experience: A 14 twist shoots 55-68 gr bullets great. 70 gr it's harder to find a good load. 75 gr the groups really start to open up. 85 gr Sierra HPBT very big groups. I don't have any info on shooting 70-85 gr. bullets with a 12 or 13.5 twist.

Thanks for all the replies.

I’ve been to see my smith tonight and we’ve decided on a straight BR, it does seem the easy button. 6GT and 6x47L were considered but brass supply is a good way off yet.

Next decision…Kreiger or Bartlein?
Both are the barrels of choice on the equipment list at big short range matches. You might choose based on price and delivery time. Most top GS take 6 monnths to finish a barrel. Eric Cortina uses Brux. Kelbly is my GS , they buy Krieger a lot. Never mentioned the speed I get. 58 gr V-max I get 3585 fps with my standard load of 33.3 gr of 8208. H322 also good fps and accuracy. I have got 3615 fps without pressure from that tiny cartridge. Approaching 22-250 speed? Very few hay fields are over 400 yards across in Ohio where I hunt. I consider the light bullets will perform to 400 yards plus. I'm the limiting factor. If I bought another barrel I would concider a 12.5 or 13 twist so I could shoot 58-75 gr bullets. Some of the replies seem to indicate a Dasher shoots faster than a 6BRX or 6BRA. All 3 shoot the same speed.
