Straight 284 Win brass from 6.5 x 284

I'm about to build a straight .284 for long range matches and was looking at brass when I frustratingly discovered that ONLY Winchester makes the brass and they don't even do it all the time. WTF??

Anyway I was looking at the Lapua 6.5 x 284 brass and it looks like it can be full length sized to work. There is already one thread on here about this

http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php?topic=3841150.msg36380155#msg36380155

But in that thread it says that the 6.5 base is wider......... According to my diagrams in my reloading manual the brass should be identical until you get to the neck area.

What am I missing here?

My thoughts were the same as the other guy in the other post, Expand the neck and full length size and voila!!

Thoughts??

The base on the Lapua is slightly bigger. You have to use the reamer made for Lapua. The same thing happens with 300WSM.The Win. brass is slightly smaller. Matt

I can understand that for 6.5-284, since there are different versions. Lapua sells "6.5-284 Norma" specifically. But 300 WSM should be standardized. After all, it is started life as a proprietary SAAMI cartridge, not a wildcat. But any slight difference in unfired head dimension should be slight enough to yield easily to a FL die.

And FWIW, SAAMI do not even document any version of 6.5-284. That should tell us something.

That's that way I'd go. Better snap those up while the sale lasts.

Just ordered 300. MAN that hurt the wallet :(

Take four 200-mg Advil and rest.

You might keep in mind that a popular urban legend (possibly true!) holds that Norma brass is "softer" than most other brass.

OP,,,no matter what you chamber ,,,dont order your reamer untill you have your ctg. brass in your hands,,,,then size the reamer/chamber to work in concert with your brass and resize die,,,,Lapua brass is notoriously different (usually larger ),,,case in mind is when I was doing a 6mm/250 wildcat (6mm SAILOR) and I mistakenly got a reamer that was based on SAMMI 22/250 ctg spec on the baseline,,,,it worked fien with Win brass,,,then I bought some Lapua 22-250 brass and "WHAT" !!!...it was .003" bigger at the .200 line,,,I had to take a BR reamer and "ream" the back half of the chamber to work with the Lapua brass ,,,,and then it was so much bigger than necessary for the W-W brass that I started loosing primer pokets and couldn't use W-W,,,the Lapua worked great,,,grrrrr,,,,,and some would say ...22-250 is standard (SAMMI--or whatever is over in Europe (CIP ??)),,,not so ,,,,,be shure and have the brass that you plan on using on hand and measure several of them,,,it does not matter how soft/hard the brass is,,if the reamer/chamber is too big it will grow quickly and leakage will occur around the primer ,,,,,,Roger

It actually tells you nothing. 6.5-284 Norma is a European cartridge and is registered by the CIP, the Europeans' equivalent to SAAMI. That applies to many excellent and widely used cartridge designs including 6mm BR Norma (SAAMI controls 6mm BR Remington) and 6.5X47 Lapua.
