Straight 284 - H4831sc - 180 Hybrids

I've found a load with a straight 284 using 180 Hybrids up around 2865 fps (56.3 grains H4831sc) in 80 degree weather. Is anybody running a similar load and what has it done on 90-95 degree days?

Depends on your gun but mine made about 10 rounds and started getting hard bolt lift and other pressure signs. Primer pockets were gone. Your at the top end from what I've seen.

expect about 2fps faster for each degree of ambient temp increase. many of us find a sweet spot on 284 at 2820-2840fps

My straight 284 out of an ejectorless Barnard used to like running around 2890 with 4831sc. With 4350 it preferred 2820-2850.

My 284 shehane likes to run 2950ish w 56.8 4831sc or 2830 with 54.5. I'm running it slow for extended barrel life and brass hardly gets worked!

Ultimately it all depends what your rifle prefers you to feed it to shoot accurately. Your load or any other load don't matter if it don't wanna shoot. Let the target decide.

Well, the paper tells me 56.3, however I know it is going to be a hot summer... I don't want to beat up on my brass too bad either, I'm a self sponsored shooter. LOL. Thanks for the help folks...

I'm at 56.3 in my shehane. Brass lasts a long time. That is probably close to a max load in a straight 284 I would guess.

Like others have said that is really close to the limit for that powder and combo. Try some RL17, You will get less barrel life but 2900fps with excellent brass life is a plus side.

QL has the 56.3 grain load at 61k psi... However, I shot the 56.6 charge and I wouldn't go past that based on what I saw.. I'm going to shoot the OCW again and confirm the previous results before I lock n load... I think the next lower node will be just below 2800 fps.. Would you give up that much performance on this caliber?

I found a similar node (slightly better) at 55.0 grains which runs about 2805 fps out of my barrel. It seems to run from 54.8 up to 55.2. I'm giving up about 3" of wind drift at 1000 yards from 2805 to 2865 but I feel better about the load and not having problems on the firing line.. 55.0 shot .161 moa and the 55.2 shot .222 moa at 100 yards..

For perspective mine is 55.0 with 4831sc and I'm at 2830 in 90 degree weather. I started seeing pressure(hard bolt lift, cratering primers) at 55.6 on the 90+ days.

Been shooting the .284 for approx 4 yrs now. I'm at 54.5 gr of 4831SC and CRONOed new at 2830 at 60 degrees. I've shot from 40 to 95 degrees and have never have a hard bolt lift. I don't over pressure my cases and am on my 12th firing. I do anneal every time I shoot. My last barrel and cases gave out at 2600 rounds.

Nothing dramatic but worth a few points per match. I was at 54.7 with 4831sc and 51.3 with H4350. Try them both and see.

Going to get my 284 F-Class rifle next week. I'd like to get up and running for a Palma Shoot this weekend. Just curious what barrel length and the COAL most people are using for the above loads. I ran these through Quickload and have come up with some high pressures. I assume that the COAL is 3.0 and above.

For my new .284 i am running 53.0 grains of H4350 and moving 2852 fps average MV the next node down was just about 2,800 fps but didn't want to run quite that slow. Ran some ladder drills from 52.0 grains (+-2800 fps) up to 53.8 grain (+-2900 fps) with no pressure signs out of a 30" tube.

Most use 30" to 32" barrel for F Open with pretty long throats. I have to pull the bolt to get an unfired round out. This is not a low pressure round :)
