Storing rifle

I read somewhere it is best to store heavy (14+pounds) rifle vertically in a hard case instead of a gun safe. If this is true what is the reasoning behind it? Sounds crazy to me. Any ideas?

Doesn't make sense to me. Vertical in a gun safe offers the same orientation as vertical in a case. Except for the fact that the case offers so additional support from the pressure of the padding and, of course, protects the rifle from being damaged when other guns are moved about in the same space, there should be not advantage. In fact, because it isn't uncommon for guns stored in cases to develop rust, I'd do just the opposite.

Don't leave them in a case, It will rust. I have mine in a safe with a dehumidifier rod and I still wipe them down every once in a while.

My beautiful 700 rem laminated heavy barrel 22-250 was 1 week old when left in a hard case overnite, I'll never ever do that again, I cried when I opened it the next day to show it off to a good friend. Rust City.
