Stock straightness and tracking (video)

Joe 3.5 lbs. Thats light for a stock like this. Most of them come in 4lb. plus now on the LG builds I do. No way I would be having Mcmillan make these if I dint think they were the best thing out there. I never got into stocks to make money, I got into it because what we wanted was not available. It took some time, but I think we will finally be exactly where we wanted. A fiberglass 4" stock with rudder that will track 100% perfect. Wood is great, but I do believe glass shoots a little smaller and damps better. We will be playing with different fills and stiffness. I can say Kelly Mcmillan is an awesome guy to deal with, very willing to give use exactly what we want. I have not had to make any compromises. Here a look at how the front rails will look.Wheeler rails.jpg

His theory is solid, 10 years ago and without any real world experience, I would totally agree.

Tom with adjustable wing on the front I don't even have to fire a shot to make it track perfectly . Yes the wide rear make it work better . Larry

Joe, the rudders are 10oz. The new ones will be about 7oz. and I have got them down to 4oz if I hollow them out on the mill.

Back out the removed stock material to determine the weight add. Not much. Or add weight to the void in the rudder if u can afford it.

Finally made another video. I have been asked by a few to do one on the adjustable rudders I install in stocks and what they do. Sorry for the quality but you get the idea. Its simple, if the stock is straight it will stay on the X when you slide it back. People give too much importance to the bags. If you carefully slide the rifle back and the crosshair falls away or lifts away your stock is not straight. Bags are more important when actually firing the rifle as they have to manage the violent recoil. And if the croshair never leaves the X it doesnt have to find its way back and they track!

I misspoke in the vid about shimming the front, should be shim the back. The white box on the 1k target is 4 inches. I did move the stock a little right when pushing it foreward as you can see. I recommend pinching the stock with 2 fingers and carefully sliding it straight back when doing this. Not easy with a camera in one hand :)

Alex I shoot the .22 USBR target, how doe's this work when traveling from target to target. I ask as most of my problems come when moving fro one target to the next, the next shot could be high or low (flyers) there seems to be no pattern, if I stay on the same target I get small groups.

Thanks David

This wont help you with that. I would make sure your bags are not too hard and stroke the gun multiple times after to move to the next target. When your moving you are binding the gun in the bags and stroking it back and forth should help re form the bags.

Does the Rudder need to be readjusted every time you set up the rear bag ?? If not than how does one compensate for its actuaal position from week to week ?? Can the ruddder assembly be ordered "hollowed" out as you've mentioned as I'd be over weight with the standard model. Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.

No its a one time deal. The bags do not dictate if the rifle will track straight back, that comes from the stock. You can cock the bag and all it will do is bind up the stock, the stock will still come straight back. Picture the rifle a just a piece of pipe supported by 2 bags. You can twist the bags and the pipe is still going to slide straight back and forth because it is straight. The bags would literally have to bend the stock to make it not come back straight. What bags can do is settle and cause the rifle to not go back to the x. Once all the settling is done, if your not tracking, its the stock. I have got them down to 5oz.
