Stock recommendations for F/TR

Looking for some stock recommendations for new F/TR build, standard Remington action, 28 inch barrel in amu contour. Really like the looks of the Ballard lowboy, other ideas for a stock that would work for me.

On the cheap end would be the choate new tactical. It has all the adjustments and aluminum bedding it is heavy though. The ballard low boy is awesome Ray does a great job on these stocks. I shoot 2 of the f-open stocks in 1000 yd benchrest and they ride the bags like a dream.

To keep as much barrel as possible I went with an H. S. 035 on both my .223 Rem & .308 Win builds, plus it keeps them the same for repeatablility on my part.

The HS is a nice stock id go with that or the Bell and Carlson A2 stock off of stockys. Try looking on here for some more ideas.

I'm running an MBR, and I love it, but the forend is kinda goofy w/ a bipod. I'm currently making my own version with a more conventional forend, while maintaining the MBR butt. I'd jump on a lowboy in a heartbeat if I had the extra cash to spend.

AI Chassis. No bedding..just drop the Rem 700 action in it and tighten the screws.

Euro Optics has them in stock.

Don't forget the weight limit - 18.2 pounds INCLUDING bipod.

Rule 3.4 F-Class Target Rifle (F-TR)

(b) (1) The rifle’s overall weight, including all attachments such as sights, sling and bipod, must not exceed 8.25 kilograms (approximately 18.18 pounds. An “attachment” also includes any external object, other than the competitor and apparel, which recoils or partially recoils with the rifle, or which is clamped, held, or joined in any way to the rifle for each shot, or which even slightly raises with the lifting of the rifle from its rest/firing point.

What about a Robertson GBF

Thanks for all the recommendations, and as pointed out weight is a consideration, for example
Bell & Carlson A2 = 3lbs
HS PST 025 = 4lbs
AI stock = 5.5-5.12 lbs
MBR and Roberton GBF are more for benchrest than for f/tr, Robertson does have the TAC and Interceptor which are great stocks, but the Lowboy is a comparable price and more dedicated for f/tr than the others, thanks for all the suggestions.

Some thing to consider most bi-pods do not have elevation adjustment. I like a taper in the rear of the stock for elevation adjustment, it WILL NOT cause elevations shots......

I don't have Jerry's credentials - I'm new to the game, but I'm working hard and getting good scores in practice. If I perform on match days the same as I practice, I'll start with a Master classification. I need to learn how to read the wind.

I have a flat bag rider that I'm experimenting with. I've found that I have to fluff the rear bag and/or squeeze the bag to get the elevation I want. It doesn't give me vertical (beyond my load's limitations). I also carry shim pieces with me to get the rear bag height right. Personally, I don't mind seeing the crosshairs move some on firing, but seeing them climb above the top of the frame really freaks me out.

If I just had one of those $500 bipods, I could leave the firewood at home.

That is the best part about F/TR. There are many ways to do your setup and hold - the shooter has to find the best one for him/her.

I totally agree with you sir with regards to elevation, I was just stating something that I have noticed during my search for a stock for my build. The Ballard Lowboy does have a slight angle (taper) in the buttstock to allow minor elevation adjustments and this coupled with several other desirable features had piqued my interest in it.

Jerry is right- the only way you should be thinking about the tracking style butted stocks is if you are using a hight adjustable bipod.

AS for the Robertson GB stock- it's the cat's ass, if you can make weight. I've also seen versions w/ the gripi flush w/ the rest of the butt- even better in that configuration.

So using a Centershot or a Sinclair bipod with the tracking style stock should negate the elevation issue, thanks for pointing that out. I visited Robertson website and sent the gentleman an email with regards to one of his stocks. Thanks for all the replies and information.

ohearchai,
You have recived some good info! As to the center shot bipod. I have looked into it and thought about it long and hard! I have spoke with 3 guys that are top level shooters in FTR. Out of the 3 only one has got the center shot to work for him! I noticed your intrest in the Lowboy Ballord FTR stock. It is a Awesome stock! I'm having Ray Bowman build me a FTR rig as we speak! His stocks and work is nothing less than first class! As far as the Sinclair I love mine! AS well I will add! Ray Bowman has got my Sinclair bipod down to 1lb 10oz. This is a huge factor when trying to make weight. My suggestion would be to give Ray a call at 336-214-5381. If you are interested in a Lowboy stock. Ray has the forumlua's figured out for the rig you seem to be looking for!

I figured they were busy people so I just sent him an email, at your suggestion I will give him a call. Thank you for your advice with regards to the Centershot bipod, sometimes it user preference, but weigh will always be a problem.

I am using the Ballard lowboy from Precision Rifle and Tool. It does have a taper on the rear flat area of the stock and does allow for elevation control. The pistol grip and cheek piece fit me perfect. I had Ray Bowman add a acc rail to mine which allows me to adjust the bipod forward and backwards. Give Ray a call at 336-214-5381.
