Stock modification question

I have a chance to get a McMillan fiberglass prone stock at a better than reasonable price. But before I pull the trigger so to speak, I'd like some input from some of you stock builders as to whether this will turn into more work than it's worth. The stock is currently inletted for a Rem. 700 action. I use all BB Panda actions. The bolt pattern is compatible with the exception of the middle receiver screw, that currently serves as the front trigger guard screw. Other than drilling it through and installing a piler, I don't see an issue. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

A Remington action inlet is on top of the wood and recoil lug between the barrel and action, a panda is a square back action and back of the action is a
the recoil lug and down in the inlet. It will not work right screw holes is a minor issue...... jim

I realize that the actions have different footprints, but can the stock be inletted for the Panda?

I said nothing about the foot print, except a square back is down in the wood and rem. is on top and the back is cut out round and that is what you need for the Panda. now you can go the other way. jim

You have to bed it anyways. You just might have to fill in the where the rear tang was on the 700. I think the rear tang on a 700 is longer than a panda. If you're painting the stock there wont be any issue. If not, you may not prefer the appearance of the fill.

You can take almost any stock that's been set up for any action and grind it out and fill/rebed it. Just depends on your abilities, and preference for appearance. You may end up needing to mill down the existing pillars to put the action low enough for your preference, and make the rear tang of the panda work as a recoil lug. You may also need to move the bolt handle cut out.

I have a stock I bought for next to nothing and filled the bolt handle, rear tang and ports with jb weld. Sanded it down, cleared it, and it looks quite nice actually. I use it as my loaner/ "rental" stock that I let some friends and new shooters use to set the hook for them lol

Call Doan Trevor. He’s the best stock maker/modifier out there and has more experience with Prone stocks than 99.9% of people on the face of the earth.

Longer Answer: Probably best to just order one that is made the way you want it.

Simple job since it is fiberglass . Filling what you don’t need. Inlet and bed new action. Paint to hide modifications.
Even if you have to relocate the bolt handle notch. JB Weld bonds without srinking. Just sand smooth and paint.
