Stock for Barnard S

Just purchased a Barnard S action (Rem 700 footprint) and want to put it in a sporter/varmint style stock..recommendations?

260 Rem,
The "Rem 700 footprint" of the Barnard S refers only to the front / rear action screw spacing and the action diameter. The Barnard is about .375" (my quick measurment) longer from the front action screw to the action face. If you purchase a stock inletted for the Rem 700, and you choose to use a Rem style recoil lug, you're faced with some stock work to move the lug recess forward. The other option would be to use a socket head screw in the 2nd hole from the front fitted to a hardened bushing that is epoxied into the stock. In either case a "drop-in Rem stock will not immediately work with the Barnard S. If the stock provider inlets for the Barnard S you'll save some work, but I think that might be a short list. I don't have any recommendations for the stock, but if you want this to be a first class job, buy a stock with only the barrel channel cut, front/rear action screw holes drilled, trigger pocket cut, and the trigger guard slot milled. Do not have the bolt handle recess cut as the shape is different is different from the Rem, and wont need to be as deep due to the 60deg. bolt throw.
In any case the effort will be worth it... the Barnard is a nice action.
Hope this helps,
Pete
