Stock finish

Link

Silver $$ Contributor
Hi I have 3 stocks for my 40 x std barrel they are all hand oil rubbed like original.

1 is so bad that I want to make a benchrest stock out of it. My question is can I just give it a sanding with heavy grit paper then paint it like you would a car? primer, base then clear over the oil?

The next stock, I would like to sand it to bring out the "grain" then maybe hand rub it. What is the best process?

The 3rd stock is hand picked and really nice I will leave that stock as is.

thanks in advance :}

You will need to degrease the stock or the paint will not stick, other than that not a problem at all........
Not sure about the bringing out the grain part by sanding......
Linseed oil is a good bet for a oil finish, but needs lots of time and effort to look nice..

Link,
If you Google "tung oil" you will find a couple of links that relate to refinishing rifle stocks.
Preacher is correct, it takes a long time and a lot of effort, but the result can be very satisfying.
It was one of my winter projects, last year, for my M1A and I am very happy with the look and feel of the stock.

Last winter I refinished a Savage laminate BVSS stock with Birchwood Casey True Oil. Actually, I bought a kit but only used the Tru-Oil.
Some one had painted the stock black, so I removed the paint and lightly sanded the stock.
Methanol works good to de-grease the stock and get rid of excess oils.
I then used 000 steel wool to do the "treatment." Steel wool, tack rag and apply Tru-Oil with pieces of old "T" shirt to rub on the Tru-Oil. Wait 2 hours and use 000 steel wool, tack rag and Tru-Oil. I did this 6 times and used 0000 steel wool the last time. The finish came out like glass! and it is easy and not too time consuming.
If you want to fill the grain or stain the wood, the kit includes the sealer and stain, which I did not use.
