stock finish

I have an unfinished laminate stock. 3" flat forend for a 6.5-284. I wanted to finish it myself. I was thinking varnish. Then I thought varnish may stick in the bag too much. The more I thought about it the more I realized I dont know what a good finish oil for a benchrest rifle is. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I was at a new friend's house this week and he builds BR stocks and they were beautiful. He uses a combination of polyurethane and True Oil and says they do not show the usual bumps and dings that straight poly does. Very impressed with his stocks and his stock finishes!

That will be my next finish for sure.

Find someone who will Auto clear coat it for you, and then hunt up some sun glasses.
Unless you object to the shine, that stuff is as tough as nails and will slide in the bags
like a greased little pig.......

If you spray with auto clear and don't want the shine, cut it with compound after wet sanding. The finer the grit in the compound, the shinier it will be.
Gives you a matte finish with the beauty of clear.

A local auto paint store will load spray cans with auto clear. It's very expensive; ~$25 for 4 ozs of paint, but it would be handy. I'll probably bite the bullet and try it.
