I shoot a 30BR in an old M40 wood stock. I use a leather front bag on my rest, and own both a leather and a cordura eared rear bag. Though I have mostly used the cordura eared bag, I'm currently leaning toward changing to my leather bag.
I've not been in the BR game long, but I'm finally comfortable enough with my own bench manners and rifle that I'm interested in a few 'tweaks' that will helpfully improve my performance.
My stock is very 'grippy' on my front bag, and I'm thinking I need to wax the stock, and possibly lube the leather on both the front and rear bags. I've tested various lubes on both leather and wood to see what seems to work best. I don't want to apply either product to bags or stock if I'm completely off base. The best contenders I've come up with so far are.....
Stock - two items, actually. One is a product called Pokon, which is a spray applied 'leaf shine' used on green plants. It is super slippery, much like wax when dry, and it won't hurt green leaves, so I doubt it could harm wood. However, I have my doubts as to it's durability under the friction of recoil. Second ...I tried Johnson Paste Wax,for furniture) but it's too sticky, even when dry and buffed. I finally found a product called Howard Citrus Shield Premium Natural Paste Wax that seems to result in a pretty slippery finish on the wood samples I've tried it on. Best I can tell, it's basically carnuba wax. All the other carnuba wax based products I've found were car waxes, with warnings not to apply them to wood.
Leather Bags - Spray silicone. Has worked well in the past on the interior of my CCW holster, but OTOH, it's also a very low friction environment.
So...anything wrong with the candidates I'm considering, or should I be looking at something else?
Thanks
Mike
