stiller long range rifle

i am building a long range rifle with a stiller tac 300 action which i already have and mcmillan a5 stock which i already have as well. caliber will most likely be .300 win mag. what is your guys opinions on this caliber for accurate long shots and what particular chamber do you recommend?

thanks ajax...

I don't find reloading belted magnums any more difficult and don't even worry about it. I basically ignore the belt. I headspace off the shoulder after one firing anyway. The 300 winny has won many long range matches over the years. Factory chambers tend to be all over the map but with a good custom chamber, good brass and good loading technique- you are in good shape with a 300 winny.

I think the 300 WSM has a little better potential but it is harder to get it to feed from a magazine. If I build a longer range rifle than what I have already, I will build it on a single shot.

I prefer the longer neck of the 30-338 over the 300WM.
The 300 WM chambering will give you the option to shoot factory ammo in a pinch.

I, too, ignored the belt and headspaced on the shoulder. But I was loading full power loads for 1000 yard shooting. After 3-5 firings, the case would expand enough just forward of the belt, where the die did not size, to make chambering difficult. Expansion of the belt miked to .001-.0015 in Winchester brass, so pressure did not seem to be the issue. Perhaps that it was a minimum "match" chamber exacerbated the problem but I have read that this is not an isolated problem.

SAAMI spec 300 win mag loads are short throated so the case will fit a magazine.

Buy yourself a PT&G 300Win Mag match reamer it will be short throated.

Buy a 30 caliber 1.5 leade throating reamer and open up your throat to allow for longer bullets like the Berger 185 or 210.

This will allow you about 3-5 grains more powder capacity.

The 300 Win Mag is a great all around cartridge it can take mice to moose and shoot paper as good as any.

There are many great load facts in writer Bob Hagel's books about the 300Win Mag one of his favorites.
