Steinert Superchrono

Steinert superchrono.jpg Hey y'all, just want to see if anybody has ever heard of or used one of these chrono's. I am deployed to the Middle East and still got a few months to go, so I am sitting here on my downtime researching reloading equipment and new toys that I want. I have read a ton of reviews on the Oehlers and magnetospeed, and all the popular ones, but haven't heard much about these. Thanks

Have you read up on the latest hot chrono- LabRadar? There are a number of posts on this site.

Yes I have and I would love one of those. I may even get one. They sound absolutely amazing. Like I said, I got nothing but time, still a few months to go, so I'm just reading about as much stuff as I can.

My father purchased one of these when they first came out here in the UK, we both thought it would be the best thing since sliced bread, but as soon as it arrived we found this was not so.

The main problem is that the device is not very long, only about 1 foot and the two acoustic sensors are no more than 8 inches apart, as a result of this the chrono has to be aligned almost exactly parallel to the flight of the bullet to give accurate readings, and this is easier said than done what the extra angle does is effectively increase/decrease the distance between the sensors and thus give spurious results.. The first anomaly we noticed was that with Federal American Eagle .308 150gr it was reading 3050 fps average out of a 24" barrel, way over normal, and then we got way out of ballpark figures on other loads rifles (sometimes 3-400 fps too fast) to the point we could just not trust it.

Steinert claim it is easy to set up using the sights to aim it at the target you are shooting at, but we found doing this, with the chrono about 1' bellow the path of the bullet and about 6' from the muzzle did not line the chrono up with the flight bath and only with very careful adjusting coud accurate results be obtained.

After a couple of months we sold it to a club member and bought a Magnetospeed V3 and have never looked back since - the best chronograph we have ever used, and probably the best money can buy.

In short I would say don't buy it, get a Magneto V3 or Sporter.
