Steer me on a mid-capacity 6mm

I asked a similar question over on SnipersHide and figured I'd ask here...

I'm currently running a 700 action with Criterion Rem-Age barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor, but to meet a hunting regulation I am thinking of switching to a 6mm. A massively overbore case isn't necessary since I only have 650yd to shoot and my shooting is recreational, not competition, so long/hot strings of fire won't happen. I also want a short 18-20" barrel for hunting with a suppressor.

I want a cartridge that will:
1. feed into a 700 action from an AICS magazine and eject from same with minimal hassle
2. run Varget or 8208XBR
3. provide at least 2500fps with the above powders and a 105gr from 18" barrel
4. provide at least 2000 rounds of barrel life

6BR fits my needs, but feed/eject issues as a repeater seem to exclude it. I've been leaning toward a Dasher as it checks all the boxes, but it seems like a 6XC or 6x47L would be "easier" since there's no fireforming and both have zero feed/eject issues from AICS magazines. I figure the Dasher, 6XC and 6x47L would all easily give me 2700fps with 105s @ 18" without leaning on them too hard.

My concern with 6XC and 6x47L is their larger case capacities relative to the Dasher, making them less suitable for Varget or XBR...but I haven't run a 6mm bore before so I'm ignorant about this. I also notice 6.5x47L brass seems to be unobtanium right now.

So what do you all think - Dasher, 6XC or 6x47L for my desired use?

Thanks!

Given the parameters, I think I`d go the 6xc, buy the brass and shoot the 105`s faster than the Dasher, brass is easier to get than the 6.5x47L....

Just seems easiest.

A center feed Magazine would open you up to the 40* Ackley shoulders.....

Just sayin`......;)

6SLR. Form brass from 243 brass, no fire forming just size and load, 30* shoulder, capacity to run heavy for class bullets, better barrel life than a 243 (it's what I went with)

If I ever build a 6.5 I'll do the same thing there too.

Ability (or lack thereof) to efficiently utilize Varget or 8208XBR with 105s is what is driving me away from 243 and similar cases toward the 'midsize' Dasher/6x47L/6XC.

Seems like most people running 6x47L and 6XC use H4350 for maximum velocity, though some seem to do well with Varget in the 6x47L. There's almost no Varget data out there for 6XC, but a few seem to have luck with 8208XBR.

Yea, the 243 case family is definitely too large and overbore for powders as fast as Varget. The 243, 6SLR, 6CM feed on 4350, N160, IMR7828ssc, H4831. Any of those will give you 3100 or betterwith 105s, without hammering the brass, in the chamberings listed.

Fair question...

A desire to simplify my reloading supply chain; a single powder for everything I load for which currently consists of 5.56 (77gr), 223AI (80/90gr), 6.5 Creedmoor (123gr) and 308 (155/168gr).

Varget and 8208XBR both meet those needs, albeit compromising velocity in some applications, with XBR much more available.

The mid 6 would likely replace the 308 and possibly the 6.5 Creed too.

The Dasher certainly has it's fans, but your giving up over 10 grains of water capacity and about 200 FPS compared to a 243 based case running slower powder.

Really I think so your using less powder and getting close to the same speed . Larry

Maybe Dashers can get 3200FPS with 105 class bullets. I don't shoot one, but I thought they were in the 2800 to 3000FPS range with that class of bullet

Remember the OP is talking a 18"-20" barrel and a suppressor. A Dasher or BRX will be a lot more efficient at that length than the larger cases. And quieting down 6-12 less grains of powder will be that much easier. With factory Dasher brass available in the very near future it seems a tough combination to beat.

6x47L at 18 to 20" would be perfect for Varget. Plus primer pockets will last a long time!!!
I happen to have on for sale as a side note.

Any chance somebody in this thread has Quickload and could run velocities from an 18" 6XC using a 105 Amax (or 107 SMK...doesn't really matter) with max load of Varget, 8208XBR and H4350?

Curious to know the speed and charge weight with each powder at max.

Thank you VERY much in advance!
