Steel hanger V3 & 6XC 500 yd groups

Rifle: Savage Target action, 6XC, 28" 8 twist Criterion barrel
Scope: Sightron SIII 10-50x60 target dot
Loads: Norma brass, 105 AMax hBN coated, 215M primer, 39 gr RL-17, seated .010 & .015 off lands, 3100 MV
After finding two loads that looked good at 100 yds, I decided to shoot them at steel at 500 yards from my portable bench. Both three shot groups measured 1.25" or .25 MOA. I chose the load that shot the steel on the left in the photo which is .010 off the lands.

The right steel target (back side shown below) is my version 3 of a steel hanger. I used 5/16 bolts and ordinary conduit clamps then slid a 1/2" rebar thru the clamps. The setup showed no ill effects after hitting the steel three times with 105 grain bullets at 500 yards. The steel tilts slightly causing the bullet splash to be directed downward.

Very nice Bill! Looks like your new Criterion barrel is shooting well. With results like this and afterv reading many threads on here i am seriously considering buying a pre-fit barrel from Briggs for a Savage rifle i own that needs a new barrel. I see you are using Mag primers also.

Frank

Thanks, Frank. Yes, it my third Jim Briggs Criterion barrel, second one in 6XC. The other 6XC is on a Savage 12BVSS model - the groups are the same size, but the load is .2 grains less and the bullet is seated longer.
On the mag primer, I had more 215Ms than anything else so wanted to give them a try. And they work well in both 6XCs and my 284 Win. I live in a motorhome (43 foot diesel pusher) so it is nice not to have to stock a lot of different components. One primer, two powders, two bullets for three guns.

Good shooting Bill. Gotta love a well tuned 6xc. ;) And the mag primers carefully loaded with R-17... good on you. WD

Thanks, Wayne. It seems that I need .5 to 1 grain less powder with the 215Ms vs LR primers. Over the course of a few hundred rounds, that is a small savings in powder.

Bill, I think they do a more thorough job of igniting R-17 than the LR primers too, JMHO. ;) WD

Bill,

Great shooting. Have been considering a 6XC myself. I think you made my mind up for me. ;D

Regards, Paul.

Paul, I don't know what you intend to use it for but I will add a little more info to entice you even more.....
A couple weeks ago, I shot a groundhog at 1062 yards. And my friend who owns a 7SAC shot one at 1025 using MY 6XC. :D And both were shot from a portable bench and bipods.

I guess I should clarify. The groundhogs were shot with my other 6XC - a Savage 12BVSS with a 28" 8 twist Criterion barrel.

Bill,

Now that is amazing shooting. My plan was to use it on long range coyotes and Rockchucks. I better head out to the shop and fire up the lathe. ;D Have a good weekend.

Regards, Paul
