Stats To Determine Strengths and Weakness’s 600yd Benchrest

It’s winter and I’m bored so here we go! Sorry for the small pic but the best I could do.

Above are actual Scores and Aggregates and finishes of a 600 yard competitor. Matches started in March and ran through September.

Course of fire starts 4 targets in LG (5 Shot groups) followed by 4 targets in HG (5 shot groups). Competitors shoot group and score simultaneously. So the object is smallest group as possible in the middle of the target.

So from the chart above what does the data tell us! What can we learn?

Said person has some work to do!!! Probably new to being a group shooter:(. I only concern myself with group, not score. I DO intend to go to some ibs matches next year, so I gotta work on where they hit:(, not just how close they are together:mad: so maybe I need advice from said person, maybe at the Memphis match in March:rolleyes:. Heck maybe said person could watch me shoot and offer advice on ANYTHING:D I’m doing wrongo_O. Maybe :)

After doing stats on several shooters, I’d say this this guy is one of the best score shooters in the country. However, he only had one 3rd place yardage finish in group for the year. So
His biggest weakness is group. He’s got to get his rifle tuned better. Also the rifle is going further out of tune from the morning to afternoon. Not bad but you can see his gun slips further out of tune for HG, which hurt him in score and group.

What would be a good 2 gun agg goal for next season for somebody like that with realistic improvement?

I think he could easily drop .200 or more off his Aggs! Also, If his Aggs where just a bit better he would have been a serious threat all year. Don’t get me wrong this guy can shoot and has turned in sub-inch groups.

As a non BR guy but a stats wonk, can you give me the crib notes on how to read the data? I can't quite figure out how the lg/hg_group number XXXX is calculated.

LG/HG agg are 4 targets each of 5 shots. So say LG AGG is the average of 4 targets. Same with HG.
Score each target has 50 points possible. Each agg 4 Targets. 2 gun is 8 targets

Here is a question for you did he clean between light and heavy. If he isn't cleaning that may be the difference were he is falling off a little.

It is pretty typical to shoot better early in the morning when you can see the target extremely well, before the sun starts getting the mirage kicked up! Not to mention the wind usually doesnt start to kick up until mid morning and builds til mid afternoon. That does not mean a guys rifle goes out of tune as the days goes on! With that noted, it does seem like someone will slip in the smallest group of the day when it seems conditions are at their worst? Maybe he just catches a more constant wind to get his 5 rounds down range? Samuel Hall
