Starting Load for .284 Shehane and IMR 7828SSC

Finally ready to load test my .284 Shehane with fire formed cases. Testing H4831SSC, H4350, N560, and IMR 7828SSC. Have good starting points for ladder tests for all the powders except for the 7828SSC. Not a lot published. Suggestions?

30" 9tw barrel. My chamber is cut with 0.245" freebore. I'm jumping 0.020" with Berger 180 Hybrids. My case OAL running about 3.215". Lapua cases.

Thanks!

The 2010 Canadian F Class Championship was won with a .284 Shehane. I know the chap and he posts now and then in this Forum.

We had a 600/1000 F Class practise today but he was at a BenchRest competition.

I will see if I can get hold of him to help you.

Bill

Thanks Bill:

Erik Cortina offline gave me a max value of about 59g. I'll be starting below that max.

Still would be interested if your friend has a 7828SSC load (or, for that matter, any other propellent) that he would care to share. Great round, great choices. I've been fire forming with 53.8g of 4831SC but ready to let the big dawg bark.

Thanks!

Hey Kyle

I started at 56gr and ended at 57.5 of 7828ssc and the 180 Hybrids. I think you will find a good node in that range. Note this was ok in my rifle but always start LOW and Work up.
Also my freebore is .230 and my oal with the Hybrids is 3.265 and NO Marks on the bullet. Approximate .010 to .020 of the lands. I could be wrong as i am not the sharpest knife in the drawer LOL !!!! ::)
But check your oal again, hope this helps.
Regards
Scott

I started at 56g and I got pressure at 58g with 7828SSC and the 180g SMKs. The SMKs show pressure about 0.4g sooner than the Hybrids in my rifle, so in my rifle, 58.4g would be the max load. Both the SMK and Hybrids shot best for me at 15-20 thous off the lands.

Hope that helps.

(BTW- 58.2g H4831SC hammers for me with the 180g Hybrids)
