Welcome to the forum Chuck. Interesting story and glad to see you getting back into it. Not living in Canada, what would have happened if the authorities found all your stuff back then? In Canada, were any laws being broken?

As far as your question, I will leave that to ones here that a far more experienced than I.

laws in ontario can. if your wife partner or a neighbour complain about you having fire arms the rcmp investigate even a fake complaint from a female in your known family or friend group can file a complaint if they do not like you and say you thretened them and not even a weapons threat they look up your firearms aqusition cert card and see what you have and come to your door hands on guns with snap off and demand removal of said weapond after reading you your rights you do not go to jail but your weapons do having a colt ar 15 H.B. target rifle I was adviced to store at my gun club by thr r.c.m.p.they had no problem with the target shooters but advised me to keep my f.a.c. up todate weapond locker was 3/4 " plywood with 18ga. stainless skin and powder locker the same with vents at top and bottom to vent gas if a fire occured so I was compliant but one word and I loose it all

glade your here but sorry to here your story.and welcome to the site

now a 308 will be just what the Doc ordered.shooting out to 300 will be a blast for ya.Varget, either 4895,R15,4064,W748,Benchmark,are some of the top powders most use.Lapua will be the number one choice for barss, then win and so on.a 168/175gn bullet will do well for ya.

Savage, and Remington both make great rifels in a 308win.for me I went with the 5R Milspec.others are getting a SPS tac in a Remington.cannot say to much on the Savage line have not tried one yet.but others give it a thumbs up.

again sorry for wht happened to ya.but now you are a part of a great site with lots to offer ya.just hold your head high and press on.

thanks johnboy in early days I liked the consistantcy of imr 4895 for my .270 and win . ball 748 powder for the ar hb but as far as load development for the .308 win its a new game.
I plan to perchase these bullets and componants to start IMR 4064,Hogdons[4895-4064 speed]
and if available benchmark, sieria 168gr matchking non moly, hornady amax[not sure on wieght], cci benchrest primers and wieght segregated brass. I am still lookig into reloading equipment but will probably perchase the savage 10pf 20" precition carbine my budget to start will be 1200 can. for rifle bases mounts rings and scope 500.00 for componants and 500.00 for the reloading equipment now the die set decision that will be a totally new game for me as I have been gone soo long and advice will be greatly adheared to.

If it's only 300yds max, even 155gr (Sierra/Lapua/Berger/..) would be fine.
Varget is ideal for this - start say at 44.5grs and work -slowly- towards 46grs max.

I wouldn't at this stage dive in with comp dies like a full Redding set until you're sure you're back to stay..
Try it out with a std die set and see how you go I suggest.

Majorchuck,
First off, welcome to the blog and back to the world of shooting and reloading, which provides good clean entertainment for most of us. Sorry to read about the history of why the break in fun. And let me state from the onset, I claim no great expertise, but have shot and continue to shoot a .308 for target accuracy which is now my thing, given I've had enough of the hunting years and my knees aren't what they used to be. Anyways, I agree with what the other have suggested. But, as a thought, .308 has always been an excellent caliber for accuracy and target shooting. But you might conisdeer doing some reading on 6.5mm's and even the .260 that some guys love and swear by. Personally I crave accuracy with each and every load I put together and am in search of that 5 shot one holer regardless of the caliber. But I have seen, first hand the incredible accuracy of the 6mm's, 6.5's even moreso and also the 260's that are extreme impressive at 300+ yds. There is nothing wrong with the .308 and they shoot very well even at 1000 yds, but do not put together as tight a group as the 6's do. SO I thought I'd make mention of some of my thoughts as I have a 6.5 in the works. And I would strongly suggest you stick with a Remington 700 action as the platform for mounting a Match Grade barrel to aid in your efforts in accuracy for Target shooting. There are several manufacturers of Match Grade barrels around including, Shilen, Hart, Broughton, etc and those barrel usually go for between $300 - $325 after looking around or getting one directly from the manufacturer. Now I will admit I am unfamiliar with the current regulations and laws of Canada so some avenues may be closed to you in putting together a rig of your choice.
In any case, good luck in your efforts and may I wish you well. I am always pleased to aid a Canadian friend north of our borders, especially after having had the priviledge of serving more than three years in a small US Army Detachment, stationed in a Nato sector of Germany alongside three forts of the Royal Canadian Regiment & Mechanized Infantry, whose members always took good care of us back in the 60's and early 70's. Hollar if I can be of assistance to you out here in California.
