Starter Drone for GS?W

I had no prior experience so I bought a Holy Stone last year to get my feet wet in the drone world. It has it's quirks, sometimes it just loses all signal, very random, no rhyme or reason. All in all, not a bad sub $300.00 item though and takes really good pics and videos.

My wifes son told me at the onset, spend the extra $$ and pony up for a DJI...that's what I'm looking for now. They just seem to be in a league of their own in the drone world. Craigslist and Marketplace have deals abound, but you gotta be quick when they appear.

My $.02 fwiw.

Have you seen the drone on U tube for $99? They make it sound like it is capable of anything and has a world class camera. It has a feature that won't let you run it into anything.

looks to good ;] I wonder if it is, good reviews.

PS Do you have to pare your phone to all to use it for a screen? Is there a chip or do you take the picture with your phone, then download somehow? TY Don

DJI...I was in Eastern KY 2 years ago. With DJI it takes a GPS launch pad coordinate. Once the batteries run down 50 percent, it will send a RTH request. I was flying at 750 ft into the head of a holler as they say in KY.i lost signal about a half mile out...the Return to home setting were preprogrammed to RTH at 1000 feet. As I approached the top of the ridge at 750 feet I was close to treetop level when I lost signal. 10 minutes later while laying the controller down, the drone decends from over head at 1000 ft and lands right back where it took off from. I never touched the controller. They are by far the best drones out there imo. Very hard to wreck. Release the controls and the drone just sits there...virtually impossible to mess up and superb photos videos.

I recently purchased a DJI Mini2SE. Very easy to fly. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos before buying. You will need to download the DJI fly app to use the drone. Mine uses my phone attached to the controller. This thing has a lot of safety features. If the winds gets too strong it will return to home which will be the spot it took off from. If it looses signal it will return also. Plenty of videos out there. Here’s one to watch below.

It's a total POS, don't believe the ad.

OP get a DJI Mini 4 and make sure he is aware of the applicable laws. The biggest are the 400' max elevation and knowing where you can/can't fly.

I've used my DJI Mavic Mini for anything I can think of. General fun, target checks, roof inspections, anything where I needed eyes.

At the time there was an awesome kit and it came with EVERYTHING. I have 3 batteries and a normal flight maxxes out at around 30 minutes. Excellent photos and vids and not difficult to fly. Once he has the gang of it he'll have a drone he can enjoy and not have to buy another. DJI also offered crash insurance, which I bought,m but never had to use.

I have an autel evo. Camera was better than the dji at the time I got it. I have used it to check targets. Very simple. Has obstacle avoidance, return to home, battery failsafe, multiple flight modes from beginner to advanced. I get any 45 minutes of flight time with each battery if just easing around. I bet if all I did was hover near the target it would last a lot longer.

Keep in mind most nice drones require you take a faa online course and register your drone, weight dictates that so keep in mind when shopping.

Also get an insurance quote for drone coverageif you go with a nice model. I have a simple policy that covers mine with state farm for around $60 annually. Covers the unit if lost or damaged as well as if it were to crash into something.

DJI MINIS were designed to fall outside of FAA guidelines at 249 grams if I recall. 250 grams rqd FAA. Unless something has changed recently. I Have had the mini over 1000 feet. Stronger winds at higher elevations limit you.

400' max AGL has been the law for quite some time. You need a waiver to go higher no matter the class of drone.

I'm not a drone guy, but I am a tech guy. I tend to not believe the hype of a lot of these Chinese sourced products, but the advances in technology make this one at least sort of credible. Newer chip-based radars, solid state gyros, cheap GPS chips; it is very possible that those cheapies can now rival the big thousand-plus dollar boys that have ruled the roost.

Just my opinion; I don't know anyone who has one.
