Starline Brass

Thanks for all the feedback. I am not a benchrest or long-range competitor. If can hit a groundhog or predator at 300 yards or under, I am happy as a clam. *

*Where did that expression originate? How can you tell if a clam if happy or sad?
From https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/as-happy-as-a-clam.html

Why would clams be happy? It has been suggested that open clams give the appearance of smiling. The derivation is more likely to come from the fuller version of the phrase, now rarely heard - 'as happy as a clam at high water'. Hide tide is when clams are free from the attentions of predators; surely the happiest of times in the bivalve mollusc world. The phrase originated in the north-eastern states of the USA in the early 19th century.

I use starline in 5.56 and 10mm and like it... You can order directly from them and get free shipping.... Never had a problem with it but with any brass you need to start a little lower than your known regular load and work up to be safe.... There was a weight chart posted here showing starline as heavy compared to LC which you can take as maybe have a smaller capacity... No big deal just work up a load.... I find you can get a better or equal deal ordering directly from them...

I noticed they had a problem with some .223 awhile back but I am sure the problem is solved by now... Keep in mind they have posted a disclaimer on their website about cheap knockoff brass and to be careful ordering from places that aren't known.... Another reason to order directly from them... Just an fyi , don't be scared to call them if the brass is out of stock... I did and they told me they would be making more ( 10mm ) in a few days I went ahead and placed my order and in three days the order shipped... So far I have zero complaints about starline brass...

That's good to hear because I haven't had much luck with 1F LC in my gas guns. Regularly I'll have great groups then have certain cases just be way off on velocity/pressure despite as meticulous as I can be short of measuring H2O capacity. I can't justify putting Lapua or Alpha in those rifles when they get beat up so much, but Starline might be what I'm looking for.
i Don't have much of an issue with LC once fired 5.56 in my Wilde chambered AR. I buy it already processed to save me some time but I'm not looking for record setting accuracy in the 5.56. Just something that shoots decent groups As it's mainly just my truck or boat gun.

In 7.62 x 51 I stopped using LC once fired standard brass. A lot of that is machine gun fired and there will be a good bit of variation in it. Plus crimped primers to deal with. I do get very good use out of their 308 LC Match or LC Long Range brass. Particularly if I can sort by headstamp year and turn necks to clean them up a bit. Plus the primers aren't crimped So no extra work there. Those cases last a long time. Even when fired repeatedly in a gas gun. And they are capable of very good accuracy If prepped correctly.

Back on topic now. I use Starline in my Grendel with no complaints. I'll usually anneal after every firing.

They are the only company still making 400 Cor-Bon brass, which is one of my favorite reloads. They also make 45 ACP+P brass which I've made into 400 C-B, both work just fine for me.

Do y'all find Starline to be more consistent than LC?
LC makes different levels of brass also, the brass head stamped as LC Match with a case number is quite good. But the run of the mill 5.56mm Military crimped sucks, IMO. So, it all depends on what type of LC brass you're talking about.

Starline also has at least 2 lines of brass, the less expensive is brass and the marginally higher priced is nickel plated.

I'm also not a good comparison as I'm using LC and Starline in different cartridges. Ideally, comparing the same cartridge to the brass would be preferred.

I'm currently using:

300 blackout Starline nickel plated
6.5 Grendel Starline brass
8.6 blackout Gorilla (I've heard Starline makes it)
308 Win LC Match

I really appreciate all that Starline does and am very happy that they have gotten into making rifle cases. I have always been happy with their handgun brass and buy it anytime I can. I very much appreciate that they are reasonably priced for the great quality and continue to offer more calibers as they can.
One day I hope to see them offer 218 Bee, then I Will be “happy as a clam”. ;)
Matt

Starline rifle brass is really good. Very consistent... I'd argue it's more consistent than Lapua but I dont have access to my measurements doc right now.

Anyway, use caution with the 223/556 brass, it has a little less case capacity, so just be careful.

Starline is what Winchester used to be... solid brass for a good price. It's not Lapua, ADG, Alpha, etc., but it has been a lot better than any Hornady, Winchester, or Federal brass I've used.

I haven't ordered or used any .223/5.56 Starline but I've ordered & shot a bunch of .360 DW that I converted to .256 WM. Also, it is now my go to brass for my 6.8 SPC's. IMHO, the quality is better than Win or Rem - if that means anything. Starline is GTG!

BTW: What is the difference between Starline's .223 & 5.56 brass?

Ive shot 5.56 in a .223 and 7.62 in a .308 couldnt tell any difference. Think the case wall thickness is thicker in the military brass. Head hardness might be harder like you say. Quality checked head hardness every morning on heading at L.C. Doug

I have 100 of the 556 starline for a new rifle. Still doing load dev but it seems decent stuff thus far. I had also picked up some of their .243 brass. I can say for the .243 the capacity is quite a bit less than the boxed Nosler. Same load I was seeing slight pressure signs.

I added Lapua 223 to my chart. Going to be a lot of upset boomers on this one guys. Lapua measures up pretty average compared to LC and other common brands.

Except for Starline, which comes in at less than half the SD of any other brand, including Lapua.

Good stuff.
I graphed your results and it shows the typical weight v volume relationship of 223/556 brass.
