Stamping barrels

I would think it sure makes it a lot easier for the thief that seals your rifle to sell it someone else! He will look more like the thief that he is if all that wasn't already there for him to read.
Although he could just lie about the cal. also.

I don't own one so tell me, how are the salvage barrels marked when you have no idea where it will index using the nut?
They are marked continuously around the circumference. It shows regardless of the index. This is on aftermarket barrels.

I use a magic marker on my unmarked barrels. .......and no, I’m not too proud or entering any beauty contests. Practicality is my main focus.
That said, every new barrel is marked by Bob Green for cartridge and neck size. My next ones will be marked with manufacture and throating dimensions. I’m starting to lose track.
I do the same thing, even a permanent marker will wipe right off with acetone. I probably have 25 current barrels right now, rem, panda, bat, some over size rems that have been trued and ect. I have lately using a cheapo viberatory harbor freight engraver and started scribbling the info on the bottom of the barrels that aren't marked with a receiver serial number.

Local trophy shop is the answer. Call around and see who can(will) do it. Chamber of cartridge is a must to be legal.

ATF: Must be conspicuously engraved, cast or stamped (impressed) on the firearm frame, receiver, barrel or slide • For firearms imported after January 30, 2002, the engraving, casting or stamping (impressing) of the caliber or gauge must be to a minimum depth of .003 inch

With My last barrel I wanted to save 200.oo. I'll shoot it till it burns up just like I did the last one.
No engravings needed... Sharpe marked.

Have you come across anything that says it applies to barrels, as opposed to imported firearms?

California nut balls could cover the whole barrel with warnings.
This product may contain lead, which has been known to cause cancer .
Use of this product may cause hearing loss.
Use of this product causes air pollution.
Use of this product causes Global Warming.
Use of this product causes fear in Liberals.
Use of this product promotes violence.
Use of this product upsets Nancy Pilosi.
Etc.,etc.

McMaster Carr sells an acid etching pen for pipe marking. It is about the size of your standard Bic ballpoint.
I would be embarrassed to post my handy work, but it won't wipe off. Have your spelling correct

As a suggestion if you know the s/n of the barrel I’d engrave it for records on the bottom side of the barrel (inconspicuous place) or record it in your data book etc...for reference if you ever need it.

Maybe I'm naive, but why would you have a serial number on a barrel? After 500 rounds it wouldn't be the same condition barrel that I bought from you. Also it would mean that you've spent time and money amassing and keeping data that likely will never get used.

If you have 5 Tikka’s and 2 barrels for each one, you want the serial number on the barrel. Same with the Remington 700s. I had a Stiller single shot and a Stiller repeater “matched” so I can switch barrels between them. I just mark those barrels Stiller.

All you need is an identifier. It doesn't need to be a s/n necessarily. Like Rem700 #1; barrel #2 on a piece of masking tape. Any other info you can keep in a notebook in your accessories box. Also you can stick the tape onto the stock so you know which barrel is installed.
