Stabilize 100gr. and heavier for 6mm

I have a VZ24 Mauser action I've used for 6.5-06 and would like to change to a 6mm Remington. I've used the 6.5-06 for prairie dog shooting. I want to change this rig to a lighter hunting rifle. I used to have a 6mm Rem. Browning single shot and have a lot of components on hand which I'd like to use. I'm thinking about a light Palma barrel, What twist do I need to optimize stabilization for 100 grain or heavier bullets?

7.5 to 8 twist will stabilize 105s and 108 Bergers just fine...

Nothing light about a light Palma barrel for sure. Would go a #5 if you still wanted some Heft to the rig.

Also, hope you go to a small base sizer on that used brass, as a new chambered barrel will probably have a significantly smaller chamber than that B78.

Figure out what weight bullet you want to shoot, then twist it accordingly. Next thing to figure out is a gunsmith that has a 6 Rem reamer, and uses uni-throaters for the 105's if you want to go down that route.
Long neck in the 6 Rem will accommodate a Berger 105 Hunting with .090 freebore.

If you haven't firmed up your decision consider the 6mm AI. Loads of Fun. Good for a little more speed. Good brass life and with the 40 degree shoulder I don't think it's any harder on throats than the std. 6mm.

8 twist will do you fine, id also take a look at the Ackley version.

When my wife had her 243 Win, (range use only) i had picked up some Hornady 105gr Match bullets.
I called Hornady and was told in no uncertain terms that they would NOT stabilize in her 1:10 barrel.
I had them, so she shot them.
Over a charge of RL26, gave good 6mm bullet holes out to 500 yards.
Furthest we got to shoot them before she traded the rifle.

For a hunting rifle that's not gonna shoot over 500-600 yards, 8" twist is what I'd go for.
I have a Savage I use for hunting with 9.25" twist 243win that shoots 105 amax perfectly. I have another 243win for targets with 8" twist and it blows up 80 gr Berger Varmints once the barrel heats up. In freezing temps the 80 gr Berger's work amazing on targets out to 300 meters.

Some barrel makers make 7.7" twists which is a decent compromise.

Funny. I had a similar conversation with Sierra shooting the 107 Match King in a 1-10 twist 6mm Ackley. I didn't have a chrono in those days but I was pushing them fast and they shot well. I called Sierra after the fact and was told with speed it will shoot.

The 8 twist recommendation is good advice. Still I would have liked to try a 9 twist.

When choosing a twist rate take altitude and temperature into consideration as they enter into the equation. Low temp and low altitude require more twist rate. I do most of my shooting at sea level and down to 40F so for a 6mm and 105 bullets a 1-8 is the minimum, a 1-7.5 is preferable. If you are going to shoot 110 sierras or any 115gn go with a 1-7. My experience tells me that a little faster twist rate doesn't hurt nearly as much as not enough twist.

Exactly. Not enough twist you have a shotgun. Too much twist, very few downsides unless you start blowing bullets.

In 6mm with 105-108gr an 8 twist should work well. If you plan to shoot heavier, there are the faster twist barrels. If you think you're going to shoot up to 115s you may want to go with them, but you may lose the ability to shoot lighter varmint bullets without blowing them up. My 1:8 243AI will shoot 105s very well, and also 87s right up to the limit of case pressure.

Maybe it's different with jacket thickness in target bullets compared to hunting bullets, but my 6mm AI 1:8 shooting 87gr & 95gr berger hunting vld's and a sierra 90 gr tipped game kings all at 3500 FPS and I've yet to have one come apart in +35c or -35c. And for what it's worthas others have said, the Ackley version of the 6mm rem is great cartridge. I just retired some winchester brass that was run with the above loads and it lasted 10 firings before pockets began to loosen up.......not Lapua tough but not horrible either.

I can shoot 110 gr SMKs in a 1x8 tube. With no problem. Tommy Mc

I've been shooting an 8 twist 6mm PRC. I can push 110 grain bullets to around 3400fps. It will shoot 110 atips, 108 elds, and 105 hybrids sub 1/2 moa and better. It keyholes with 112 match burners and will shoot about 3/4 moa with 110 match kings. The 110 smk is longer than the 110 atip. I think I could shoot the 110 smk better with more twist.

First time I ever shot over 100 bullets it was in the cold Canadian Winter with 105 A-max, Can't remember the DA but elevation was right around 500 feet above sea level and in the 9.25" twist they shot superbly.
