SSS TRIGGER/HELP

jonbearman

I live in new york state, how unfortunate !
I bought a new SSS trigger for my savage. After reading the instructions I realized they were partially worthless.I set it up with a trigger pull gage. The problem is getting it down to under a pound pull weight. The instructions say to reduce the sear engagement to not less than .010 or the trigger could go off unexpectedly. The trigger weight screw is useless as it does nothing basically.Any help or thoughts would be appreciated.Cant get through to ask Fred.LOL

Jon,

Since you bought and installed it, I assume this is the "Competition Trigger?"

It is rated as 12 oz to 2 lbs. It is possible that 1 lb. is the best that particular one can do. Both my 12F rifles have "Evolution Triggers" installed. They can be adjusted down to about 4-5 oz. as long as you do not cycle the bolt too hard.

One pound is not bad if there is no creep and overtravel. I have a Jewell on a Pierce tactical that is set at one pound and it is a joy to shoot.

All that said; the instructions that came with the Evolution were not very clear. I had to run through the process several times before I obtained a satisfying result. They are no Jewells but perform acceptably once adjusted.

I don't know if it would do any good, but you might contact Kevin Rayhill at Stockade Gun Stocks. He knows Savages and could possibly help.

I also bought the SSS trigger for my model 12, but I let my very qualified gunsmith install it. He had it at 14 oz., and after about 50 rounds fired the firing pin started dropping when I closed the bolt, gently, as always. He worked on it again and set it at 1#. So far it's holding. A Jewell it is not. One of the reasons I still favor the Remington 700's to build on. :(

For a non customized Savage action the Rifle Basix II trigger is hard to beat. I have three that are all set to 7ozs for reliable safe functioning off a bench. Try going much lighter and reliability/safety goes out the window.
Set them all by trial and error to function correctly without a trigger guage. Found it amusing when I borrowed a guage to find they all broke at 7ozs.

I have an Evo 2 Fred did for me. Judging by my Jewel its around 2-3ozs. No guage to know exactly. Sure did'nt come with instructions tho ??? Thats fine by me. I don't want to mess with it.

No doubt theres a larger, better selection of triggers for Remingtons. Correct me if I'm wrong but you can't just slap a 2oz. Jewel on a factory Remington and expect it to function. Can You?

No, but the adjustment procedure takes around 20 minutes and is very stable from that point. The Lyman digital gauge is a big help when adjusting any trigger.

Joe: Yes, in fact I just recently installed a Jewell 2 oz. in one of my 6ppc's. Closed the bolt much harder than I normally would and it continues to hold. I cannot tell the difference between the Remington/Jewell 2 oz. and my Bat/Jewell 2 oz. And that was the idea.

i have installed at least 6 sss triggers. all have went pretty good, with the 4.4" action and no grinding. the older action and fitting takes more time. i usually set them at just over a pound and they have been working great, crisp and no creep. cliffe

It is crisp compared to a factory one however it wont go to the 12oz as advertised. It is now at 1.2 pounds and thats as low as it will safely. The instructions were very strange as to how to adjust it.Right in the instructions it says the poudage adjustment has little to do with setting the weight.I have a small amount of sear engagement and that is the best it will do.

One of the things that did not impress me about the SSS trigger was the instructions. They label the adjustment screws as "a,b,c & d" on the sheet of paper, but there are no idents on the trigger housing at each screw location, so you know which is which. Not impressed at all, and I will probably eventually replace it (at the next failure) with the Rifle Basix, of which I have several, and they have been problem free.

I have a SSS trigger in my Savage that was installed in 2000. It's set at 13oz. I've never had any trouble with it.

I had a gunsmith install it for me. He had to do some filing to get it to fit right. I'm taking his word for the weight of pull. It's light and crisp. It's in a Savage 12 bss-s I bought new in 2000.
