SR Magnum Primers - CCI 450 Vs Wolf

I use Palma brass for my 308W F T/R and have developed loads using CCI 450 primers. I cant get these primers and am going to use Wolf SR Magnum primers. Does anyone have experience with loads using these different primers? How much velocity variation (if any) using these primers?

Any info much appreciated!

Ian

I just started using them and I think they are a little bit hotter than the CCI 450. Haven't chrono'd them yet, they just seem to show pressure signs a couple of tenths of grains quicker.

The wolf srm primer is a standard primer with a thicker cup to stand up to higher pressure. They are a mild primer, which is why alot of guys like them. I have experianced delayed ignition and vertical flyers with them in all 3 of my bench guns. I stay with the cci 450.

I have used Wolf SRMP without andy problems other than about 2 out of every 100 don't go bang and sometimes hang fire.

I have had severeral customers who have had issues with Wolf primers. I have been told Wolf contracts with several manufactures in Russia to make their primers and there can be some inconsisties between batches.

I shoot SRM primers in my BRX(s) and have used CCI 450, and Remington 7 1/2 withjout any issues.

I have had piercing issues with BR4 and Federal 205M primers with the BRX.

These are the only 2 small primers I use. (except for BR4 in 6PPC).
In my 308 using 2206H (H4895), the velocity averages about 15-20 fps lower when using the Wolf/PMC SRMs compared to the CCI 450s. The ES was also higher with the Wolf/PMCs in my 308.
The Wolf/PMCs are still my favourite in my 22BR,6BR,6 Dashers, but definitley not in my 308 or 6x47.

I've had good results with Wolf SRMs (that's what I ordered a couple of years ago; the box says KVB-556M), especially in 223 heavy bullet loads. When it comes to loads in Dasher, 6x47L & 6.5x47L, I prefer R 7-1/2 or CCI 450s. I would expect issues with a primer as mild as these in a 308 Palma case, but have found them to be perhaps the best of anything I've tried in 223 & 223 AI. They will handle more pressure than any other primer I've tried, and that includes CCI 450s & BR4s.

I went to the range this morning and tried CCI 450s and BR4s. I shot a few 5 shot strings with the MagnetoSpeed chrono attached and the only difference in velocity was the usual few fps variation. I forgot all about the BR4 but they have the thick cups the same as the 450s and seem to be a drop in replacement for my palma brass and 200gr Hybrid target loads.

Thanks to all for contributing to the info I needed on the primers! It put me off trying the Wolf SR Mags as I had the option of the BR4s.

I only use Russian KVB-5.56M (SRM) in my Lapua Palma brass with 230 Hybrids. I shoot a fairly heavy load of H4350 and have not had problems with either ignition or ES. I see no reason why the CCI 450 would not work well. I use them in some 6BR loads where they perform very well. The Remington 7½ is also a fine primer but hotter than the other two.

I used Wolf large rifle standard primers in my first 243 WIN bench rest gun for 2 years and 2500 shots. then I built a new 6BRX and started out with 1000 BR4's as I couldn't find any Wolf SRM primers. After 900 of those I found some Wolf SRM and did a 50 round comparison and couldn't detect any difference in scores or MV. The last 500 rounds have been Wolf. Last week I loaded 32 each of wolf and BR4 and saw again, no difference at the range.
But, the Wolf are HALF the price of the BR4!!
