Squirrels

Florida allows 12 squirrels per day. The season is still in. Yesterday I went just north of Tampa to work on some guy's Quad and help run his tractor. Fun times and lots of things done. Around 4 PM the feeders were full for hog hunting and I had some time. Out of the the truck came my Marlin 17 HMR.

One hour and 10 shots later I had 8 squirrels. All were in the 80-110 yard range. One "stuck" on a tree upside down and took a second head shot to drop. One, I think my shot went low on his head, I did not recover. All head/neck shots with the 17 stopped them fast.

Cleaning those 8 and discovered a jacket under the neck skin of one. It had shed the core. Good reminder to not use the 17 gr. 17HMR on anything much larger than "small" game. Those little Hornady bullets do not hold their lead core well.

Fun times and got home by 10 PM. Gave all squirrels to an older (there are some still alive) fellow who's wife makes a great squirrel spaghetti. Gonna get some too.

I'm one of those guys who loves squirrel, although at the age of 60 I have only just reached "middle age".:p

We've got Silver Grey Squirrels around here, but it is a rare day when I could get as many as eight of them. The other squirrels that I shoot thousands of -- well, I haven't gotten hungry enough to eat them. jd

I hear ya on the Hornady 17gr..I had a crawl off last year and they just didnt do the job very well. Switched to the 20gr. and have had much better results. Not to mention my gun likes them better.

Reminds me to shoot only big red squirrels fed on corn. They taste great. I can still remember the squirrel, biscuits, and gravy mom would fix Sunday mornings after a good Saturday hunt.

Will do a postscript if the guy does come up with the squirrel spaghetti.

My Marlin never liked the 20 gr. They also sure dropped faster. Right now I have about 4,000 of the 17 gr Hor. Not gonna waste them.

This is going "downhill" fast.

I have about 18 kills with my Walmart Beeman air rifle from the back porch. Alex is welcome to sit back there with a "cold one" and pretend he is in Michigan. Then we will go to Manatee and see if he is still "the man".
