Squirrels chewing on my house no more...

The Squirrels have been chewing on my house. I bought a CZ 455 combo gun 22LR and 17 HMR. The trigger pull was poor at best. I honed and deburred the sear and trigger. Changed the number 35 wire spring for a number 17 wire spring. I made a .122" bushing for the front pin in the trigger. Much less creep, and over travel. Trigger pull weight is 8 oz. It is now shooting sub .5 moa. I installed a 3-9 Lepould 22 scope. I have now shot over 20 squirrels in the lst 3 days. They now run hide at the sight of my car or me oustide the house.
Don't have many groundhogs where I live now but plenty of pesky squirrels.

Great job on the trigger. I've polished Winchester triggers and sears but never got one down under one pound. On one, I still had a 3 pound trigger after completely removing the spring - that's when I knew I had to start cleaning and polishing.

And good shooting on the squirrels. We always see lots of the little buggers when we spend a month in Kinston visiting my wife's oldest & family. Are you located anywhere near Sightron?

Which caliber did you use on the squirrels and if it was the .17, was there anything left of them? ;D

Yes, I live 2 miles from Sightron. No, I am shooting the 22lr with Federal 36 grain HP they are advertised as shooting 1250 fps. As of this afternoon I am up to 26 squirrels.

I can sympathize with the squirrel problem, last fall the little buggers chewed my cars wiring harness in several places causing all kinds of electrical problems and a $2k repair bill (thank God for state farm). Needless to say I went on a mission with a CZ .17 and a Remington .22. Don't see as many coming around lately, but I'm still getting them now and again. Sounds like you did a great job on your trigger.

Keep the count going. I had a little area behind the house and down by the creek dedicated and set up for wild life to come in and feed on different things. I set it up for my father as he was unable to get around very well and he really enjoyed watching what ever came in. In no time the squirrels came and took over and would find a way to get to anything that had food on or in it. They are very clever, persistant and great acrobats. I finally had enough and i would get a large sand bad and open the patio door which was on the second floor, lay on the floor inside the house and have some fun. It did not take long to thin them out.

Have fun thinning them out and keep us posted on the count.

Nat, We have a small pear tree that goes berserk about every 3 years. Last year was one of them. Squirrels came from miles around to cut pears down and then take one bite out of them. I tried tying old CD's in the tree that flapped around, then the spray squirrel repellent, then trapping them. Nothing worked. In desperation, after relocating them failed, I decided to rehab them. With a RWS .22 cal pellet rifle. Just under supersonic. I had "rehabbed" over 50 0f them before the neighborhood ran completely out of them. I had begun to think that I would never stop them. In the last 3 weeks that we harvested pears, only one squirrel showed up, and he left the pears alone. My theory is that there weren't any pear cutters left to teach him to do it. It is unlikely that he was smart enough to realize the fate of so many of his kin. It is also possible that he just got lonesome, but for whatever reason, after a couple of weeks, he disappeared. Without my help.

I'm inside the city limits, so stealth was important. I must have been successful.

You mentioned the little turds chewing on your house. One of my neighbors had squirrels that had chewed their way in and were living in their attic. She asked me if I had noticed that the squirrel population seemed to be absent. None in her attic for the first time in a couple of years! I agreed that they did seem to be missing, but that I didn't miss them. Clever play on words, huh?

Old retired guys are really easy to entertain.

Fun thread, Tom

A few years ago, I got the surprise of my life when I hit the starter on my gas grill and I got flames coming up from underneath it. Seems the squirrels had chewed the rubber line running from the bottle to the grill. I had a possible catastrophe on my hands but had to reach down and turn off the valve before things got real serious. Just got a couple minor burns but the squirrels were now on my sheet list. Changed the line and wrapped it in tinfoil. Haven't had any problems since then. A couple well placed stings with the pellet gun helped too.

I shoot every squirrel that comes on my property. I use a .17 HMR or a .177 pellet rifle. They have managed to ruin every nice bird feeder I own, dig up bulbs, etc. Just when I think I've thinned them out a new herd appears. It keeps my offhand shooting skills sharp.

I invite my hunting partners sons up . These young men youngest going into the military next year loves to Squirrel hunt . I wish he enjoyed Crow hunting .He tells me Crow hunting is to easy and he doesnt like to just shoot them and leave them laying . 2 years ago they got 48 or 49 ,I'm starting to see them again darn tree rats. Time for a stew soon I can see. I worked for the Power Company for many years besides shorting them selves out on poles we had different cases where they chewed on the main line cables many a time i found a smoked up tree rat at the base of a pole fried over done.

That video is toooooooo funny! ;D your stories remind me of the time I went to light my gas grill, opened the lid and almost got mauled buy a squirrel, I jumped, cussed and almost wet myself! Squirrel's are not the worst problem, had a bear sniffing around my smoker and licking the fat drippings of the deck. Didn't really bother me till he started to move my smoker around for a better angle. When I stepped out the back door he climbed a tree that is next to the deck and started wolfing. Hit him full face at less than 6ft with bear spray, he launched off the tree landing 15ft away and beat feet out of the country. He has not been back, I think I made an impression. Fun thread guys, just had to share that one. ;D

Squirrels -42. Who would ever think there were so many squirrels at my house. The two hickories just keep bringing them in. I had 6 escape with minor injuries yesterday. Theyare very wise to my presence and run like hell when I go outside.
Nat Lambeth

Nat, by now you are having the same doubts I did about ever being able to get all of them, but that is 42 that won't chew on your house anymore!

I pull a chair over and sit just inside my dining room, slowly ease one french door open, and rest the forearm against the edge of the other door. Steady enough so I don't miss often. They can fool you though. I've seen them hit the ground and flop around then get up and run off. They do get really wary though. It got harder and harder to get the door open without spooking them. I had one that when I passed inside by the door would haul a$$. I finally cut his career short by sneaking around the house and hiding by the back corner. It had gotten personal by then.

Man, I must be really easy to entertain!

Back in the mid 80's my late grandfather had a bunch of hazel nut bushes mature and bare fruit (he waited eons for this to happen). Well all of a sudden every tree rat in the town found its way to his house. He lived near the city limits of Roch NY so a firearm was out of the question. One day after high school my father informed me that my grandfather needed the services on my trusty Crosman 766 pump up air rifle. I stopped over and after a great plate of pasta and a glass of red (Italian grandparents) I gave him the rundown on how to operate the gun. Well within the first few days he had smoked a dozen of em, and he ran through a tin of pellets in two weeks, the body count climbing. Keep in mind that he couldn't kill a deer to save his life (he hunted with his old side by side shotgun and wore bifocals). But he was on a mission with the squirrels. He sure could shoot that airgun.
He was an Italian POW in WW2 captured by the Germans in and then escaped from Greece, then marched back to Italy.
He lost his battle with colon cancer in 1989, at the age of 72. He is missed dearly.
