First things first-----not in a place where I can choot'em.

Anybody have a good experience with a catch and release trap in this size ?

Any information appreciated.

I used the size you would use for squirrels to catch a large wood rat. I didn't have anything I could submerge the trap in. So I used a long screwdriver to kill it. I wanted to avoid being bitten by it. Wasn't quick or painless.

The way I dispose of mice caught in a live trap is to sink it in a homer bucket with enough water to cover it. Quick and painless. For the squirrels, you could get a plastic planter and put some water in it. Unless you drove them a ways, they might return and now be trap wise. A good food source if you just drown them.

Another option that I used to kill rabbits is a wood rat trap.

You could attach them to a tree trunk and bait the trigger with peanut butter. Just don't let one spring and catch you. They are really powerful.

I have used havaheart traps for years. Just make sure if you really want to release them , take them to a farm field or something at least 5 miles away.

Bought a small two door trap probably 45 years ago for my parents to trap squirrels that were enjoying the garden and digging in the flower beds. They would trap and relocate as many as 60 squirrels per year with a single trap. Worked best when one opened only one door and placed the bait near the closed door. Those little buggers are quick and do learn. They become quite spooky around the trap. Legally one needed to get a permit in DE to trap squirrels at the time. Every year when my mother renewed the permit the wildlife officer was amazed how many squirrels she had trapped. A permit is probably not an issue unless your neighbors belong to PETA. I continue to use the trap to keep the squirrel population somewhat under control during the gardening season. We have been trapping and relocating approx. 25 per season recently.

We have them here by the thousands and I can't make a dent in the population. I can shoot them and have my bait box set up exactly 20 yards out. I also have conibear 110s on tree limbs leading to bait and other traps out, still can't make a dent.

Thanks guys-----have ordered a Havahart.

I've enjoyed the little snots but one gnawed through the back porch screen-----hopefully there might not be too many.

My previous experience has been there always seemed to be a replacement for every one I deleted.

We'll see.

The square two door traps work well. Bait them with peanut butter and they will come. Have had as many as 9 at one time, then I dunk them in pond or horse trough

I have caught squirrels in a Havaheart trap. They get pretty excited. I had a lot of trouble with racoons for a while tearing up my bird feeders so I trapped six when I got tired of shooting them. They're a whole different problem. One particularly large old one bent up the trap's trigger. The traps are sort of hard to repair but they do get the job done.

I trapped a skunk once. Yes, on purpose. You really can't relocate one without getting sprayed. So killed it with my pellet gun. Still stunk up the place. A neighbor said to enclose the trap in a black plastic or a blanket only leaving the open end still open. Attach a garden hose to the bag and then when you trap the skunk, put the other end in your tail pipe and run it until he is dead. No smell kill.
