Spring has finally arrived !!

Planning of starting the 2014 ghog campaign next week since the temperatures are expected to be in the 60's here in eastern PA.

It been a hard winter here and I'm itching to get at it. :)

Saw my second Ghog today...last week saw first one high-stepping across a snow bank. Today one wandered about in a field with some snow in it, and it looked healthier. But it is 20 out right now. I have had enough of this....

On the positive side, trout opens April 1 and this year the lakes are still solid, and the runs did not come two weeks before the season opened! Woo-hoo, still hope for a few 'bows!

I don't know if I'll take a woodchuck before I did last year or not, first two taken on 3/30 last year! Still working on getting the components to put this 25-06 barrel on my Savage action to shoot woodchucks with this year! The 88gr. boat tail BIBs showed up in the mail yesterday and I can't wait to see what they do to a whistle pig ;)!!!

You guys are making me feel guilty! Our rockchucks and squirrels are up, and at present, I'm staging gear for a rat shoot next week here. If I post any pics of rifles and rat-fun, I'll be sure to preface the post with a disclaimer so as not to bum you eastern and midwest guys out too much. You guys there have really been hammered with global warming this winter; sorry.

But someone has to be out there with rifle and bench thinning out the rabid hoardes of alfalfa munching varmints in the west, right? ;)

Have faith.....the crap WILL melt eventually! :-\

I don't blame you for going out! Lord knows I would if conditions were favorable. Have fun and keep us in the loop on the rat shoot :)!

The bad news? I'm still in Northern Connecticut, it still feels like winter and, there's a chance of snow tomorrow night. The good news!, There's a three bedroom ranch sitting on 20 acres in central Virginia, 10 miles north of the North Carolina border. And, the best news?, I purchased the little farm over Christmas and fully intend to make a one way trip in two weeks.

Rumor has it that they've already had several 60+ degree days and spring is well on its way. I'm surrounded by small farms and those who appreciate our sport are far more common than my current neighbors.

This spring will definitely be special.

Ya snow in NY. Last year I went to Fl for spring brake came home to budding trees this year though I come back to temperatures in the teens and even today, a week later, we had ice and temperatures in the low 20s. Guess we didn't put enough emissions in the air to shorten winter lol. Tell that to the hippies and tree hugers.

73 degrees yesterday and the pigs were out! saw 7, 3 played "smack a mole" in that they would just peek and hide plus i was about 100 yds and i think they saw me. the one at 144 yds lingered just a bit too long. the 60 gr berger (hollowpointed by myself) exited the barrel of my 22 BR at 3600 fps and hit with a WHHHAAAPPP and he did not move...instant cessation. one big male weighing in at 8# 12 oz.

Good shooting! I have some .257 cal 88gr. BIBs I'm going to run on woodchucks this year through a 25-06. If the terminal performance isn't up to expectations they will be getting the hollow point treatment we discussed some time ago!

Ok, that farm in VA sounds really nice. I am spending more time on the net looking for next employment than I am cruising Accurateshooter! But I am filtering all potential employ with "Is it a red state?" "Is it warmer?" "Is it near a range or better, can I have my own?" and lastly, and easily yes, "Are the taxes lower than NY?!!"

Going out tomorrow if it does not rain to try my hand at mud-slogging for a woodchuck. Time to unlimber the new K-Hornet.

I saw two today! Was REALY hitting myself hard cause I did not take my gun. Right now is perfect for ground hog shooting. All the grass is packed down by all the snow that is just melted so you can see them.

hate to rub it in...yeah. 75+ degrees yesterday and i almost got tired of the killing! a lush green sinkhole and they kept coming out...and dying. 187 yds and my 6mmBR put a 68 gr cheek that i hollowpointed directly into his 9#7 oz chest and he did not move, not even a tail flick...DRT in capitals. his body still warm and another 9# come out of the woodpile and gets the same. neither had an exit wound, just a chest full of mush. an exit wound means energy wasted. then a 7# squirt goes for a walk...his last. he came out of a hole that has two others within a few feet. i'm getting ready to leave and saw a reddish object at 97 yds moving near a barn,so i went prone and, you guessed it, dropped another huge one with no exit. the landowner came out and shook her head and said "kill the all". my mission is to comply.

Hate to rub it in, Huh???

Eat dirt, Rat Fink. ;)

We had 4" of snow a few days ago, and the fuzzy little guys haven't even got around to doing their manly duty yet!! At this rate, it will be August before I get to whack any. :( :(

Saw a big fat pig yesterday on my way home from work, about 50 degrees out. The SOB saw my truck and hauled a$$! I swear them pigs know my truck when I drive by and they fear it ;)!!!

Are woodchucks in the east really that spooky??? Out here in Montana the rockchucks must be a lot dumber. Last year I had a set up at a friends place where I was leaning back against a big blow-down pine tree about 100 yds. from a big rockpile with lots of 'chucks. Rifle set up on tall bi-pod. Big brush pile from tree about 15ft to my left. When I walked out there I new I was going to spook all the 'chucks on the rock pile just as I knew that with-in about 10 to 15 minutes some body was going to stick their head up to see if I was still there. Lots of times I have to use my binos to glass all the little nooks and crannies to pick them out and sometimes I'll go ahead and bust them right then and there. Sometimes if it's real sunny I'll wait until that little bugger wants to get some heat off those rocks (seems they can't resist)--then I'll bust 'em. Quite often shortly after I shoot the first one another will stick his head up to see what all the noise is all about. Well I played out this scenario at my buddies place and after the 3d or 4th 'chuck was dead I looked over to my left and ther's a chuck halfway up out of his hole right at the edge of the brush pile. Took a shot with my .22 pistol and figured I'd pick him up on the way out. 2 more chucks off the rock pile and about 15 minutes later and theres this cheeky bugger at the brush pile again. Huh, must have missed. ( I suck with a pistol) Take another shot with the .22 pistol. Gone. Wait about 15 minutes and take 2 more off the rock pile and wouldn't you know there's that lucky little bastard at the brush pile again. ( I really, really suck with a pistol!) So I pick up and move over to the rock pile, picked up my dead and settled down to wait. With-in about 5 minutes that dumb-assed rockchuck came up halfway out of his hole and was looking right at me. Sun in my face now, not a good thing. Any way gathered up the trigger on the .17 Fireball and that 'chuck lost his mind. Literally.
Don't remember woodchucks being as spooky as you guys make them out to be but I haven't shot at an eastern 'chuck in 40 yrs. or so. They must have been to college since I was last there! :P :P :P
