Spring has finally arrived !!

Walked by the picture window on the river side of the house this afternoon a there was the first woodchuck I've seen this year running along the bank.. That's the last run he (?) will ever take. 17HMR square in the shoulder and he (?) rolled down the bank DRT. No picture unfortunately for proof cause the river is running a tad too fast with the melt right now, but that's OK---The shot made me feel like spring is in the air here in Indiana......FINALLY !! Good Luck to all the rest of you varmint hunters ;D ;D

It is March 24th and we (Central NY)are expecting snow tonight. I am going bugs! Every year I tell myself that 3 months of summer are worth the 7 of winter and 2 of mud...but I think I have been delusional. The south is looking better ever minute.

Couldn't agree more!!

It's been pretty much winter here since the end of Sept. and won't change much for at least a month...... Spring what's that????????

It sure is ironic. While the northeast has had record breaking cold it was recently announced on a local TV station that Phoenix, AZ just had the 2nd warmest winter on record. I think we had 3 days all winter that did NOT make it to 60 degrees.

No sign of spring in northern Michigan yet, going out on lake Huron ice fishing for lake trout this afternoon. Still 20" of ice!

Here in S.W. Michigan I have seen a couple whistle pigs and some green grass until last night, more snow! All the lakes are still frozen but, thawing slowly. Spring is slow coming here in Michigan!

Well, sad news here in northern Indiana this morning, Woke up to 2" of snow. Makes me re-think my original post a little :( Good news is in the 60's starting Sunday :) :) The BEST NEWS is----NO SCORPIONS ON THE CEILING !!!!! ;D ;D

"harvested" my first ghog here in east tn on 22 feb...8# 7 oz...a male on the lookout. sat, mar 21 i saw 7 and went 2 for 2. the others were on property i don't have permission to hunt....yet. a 7#7oz and a 7# 15 oz both taken with 22 brs. most shooting in my area is short range with occ shot beyond 350 yds, so my 22 brs shooting 60 and 64 gr bullets drop them with clover, etc still in their mouths, sometimes without a tail salute. when the reamer arrives i'm have a 6x45 built and plan on shooting 60-64 gr bullets without much recoil so as to see hits and misses.

I don't know where you guys are getting your information about scorpions on the ceiling. I have NEVER seen a scorpion on the ceiling. In fact, the last scorpion I saw was in 2007 - and it was outside. Having lived in AZ since 1990, I have seen a total of 4 inside.
Maybe sour grapes? ;) :D ;D

Well this thread has eliminated Wyoming, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan from my list of places I may move to....thanks guys!

Hey Nomad, got any space next door? ;D

I am thinking I need room for 6 people, a nice benchrest and about 600 yards...you can keep the scorpions and snakes, and I will take the warmth! 8)

Winters since 2008, Ray. I lived here in AZ year round from 1990 thru 2007. Almost forgot, one winter was spent in TX - won't do that again. The highlight was letting Erik Cortina fondle my Savage PTA. ;)

Snert, the housing market is recovering very quickly here in AZ. There were some real deals a couple years ago. We live in a 1152 sq ft manufactured home in a retirement park. Paid $20k for the home but pay $400 per month space rent. It is a 55 and older park, so I don't think you would qualify.
As far as snakes go, I see more every year in Ohio than I have seen the whole time I have been in AZ. I'm not saying they aren't here but I don't see them.
Usery range, 7 miles from me, has a public range, HP range, rimfire, shotgun, and handgun ranges. Unlimited shooting for $85 per year, IIRC. HP range goes to 550 yards.

If you limit your residence due to Arachnophobia you better like cold because Antarctica is the only continent that doesn't have Scorpions. ;D Below from Wikipedia-

Scorpions are found on all major land masses except Antarctica. Scorpions did not occur naturally in Great Britain, New Zealand and some of the islands in Oceania, but have now been accidentally introduced in some of these places by human trade and commerce.[3]:249 The greatest diversity of scorpions in the Northern Hemisphere is to be found in the subtropical areas lying between latitudes 23° N and 38° N. Above these latitudes, the diversity decreases, with the northernmost occurrence of scorpions being the northern scorpion Paruroctonus boreus at Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada 50° N.[3]:251

Today, scorpions are found in virtually every terrestrial habitat, including high-elevation mountains, caves and intertidal zones, with the exception of boreal ecosystems, such as the tundra, high-altitude taiga and the permanently snow-clad tops of some mountains.[3]:251–252[7] As regards microhabitats, scorpions may be ground-dwelling, tree-living, lithophilic (rock-loving) or psammophilic (sand-loving); some species, such as Vaejovis janssi, are versatile and found in every type of habitat in Baja California, while others occupy specialised niches such as Euscorpius carpathicus, which occupies the littoral zone of the shore.[8]

Five colonies of scorpions (Euscorpius flavicaudis) have established themselves in Sheerness on the Isle of Sheppey in the United Kingdom.[9] This small population has been resident since the 1860s, having probably arrived with imported fruit from Africa. This scorpion species is small and completely harmless to humans. This marks the northernmost limit where scorpions live in the wild.[10][11]
