Spotlight for hunting coyote

.. I can tell you that true 200 yard varmint lights are scarce as hens teeth, and the best handheld, self contained units won’t stretch much beyond 300 in average conditions.

...

Buy a Maxtoch 2X and you will immediately retract that statement.

Haven't seen it mentioned, so I'll throw it out.... A big factor is what's legal in your state. I went with a thermal sight because here in Idaho you can't use any device that projects light unless you're on private property. Thermal is GTG anywhere and since a lot of my hunting is on State and FS ground it helps me increase how much hunting I can do.

I've been shooting under lights since I could walk. The amount of people I know who can kill anything consistently past 200 yards at night is few and far between. I've always used good quality lights and optics. The scopes I have mounted currently are nearly all fixed power. I have an 8x56 Schmidt & Bender, Kahles, 7x56 Meoptas and 7x50s. The rule of thumb I was taught and teach and will stand by is if you can't make out the body of a fox through an 8 power scope, he's past 250 and it's probably too far.
I've only ever looked through one Leupold scope under lights that was any good and it was a 1980s built 3-9x40 VX2. The current crop of new ones leave a lot to be desired for me. Meopta is a much better starting point dollar for dollar.
I use nothing but halogen lights, HID is rubbish, the frequency is wrong for game. I've not messed around with leds yet, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Fyrlyt is definitely worth a look for guys who want to do it seriously. Genuine long range light.

FYI most people (myself included) will miss over the top. Judging range on the fly at night from a car is difficult, which is why I use the gear and set ups I use. Guns sighted in 1"@ 100 yards allow you to hold dead on anything in the light out to 250 with most calibres.
