spin drift at a mile?

I am going to try my hand at a mile with my 338 lapua and 300 Bergers. I am zeroed at 100 yards and wondering how much should i dial in for spin drift to start out with, or should i? Thanks

Maybe it is because he can at a mile and he can't at ten miles!

And he can shoot mostly at 100 and not at 1000.

I was just wondering,I shoot 200yds to 1000yrs weekly ,I have 720yds at home and I go to the place we shoot monthly steel and shoot once a week an yes I have flung a few at a mile target , just did not trip my trigger as much as the rest ?

To answer the question WHY A MILE? A friend of mine just finished his range and it is a mile long, i just want to try it for fun. After all to have fun and spend time with my two daughters is the main reason i shoot, its fun to me. A couple three years ago i had never shot 1000 yards so i went to Oak Ridge to try it, with the help of a great bunch of guys there i actually had fun doing that and learning something new. This evening myself and my daughters are going to try the mile thing and i just bet when my girls hit the target at that distance the smile on their faces will be priceless to me. Thats why!

Having shot only to 400 myself so far. How big does a target have to be to see it at a mile? I know this will be a subjective to power.

It amazes me that snipers can see and identify a human at that distance and beyond

If you're shooting that far, you have a great spotting scope to ID your target.

A fixed 10x rifle scope is easy to see targets at 1200 plus yards... you're almost there at that point....

It doesn't even require a mile to experience the delay (which, by the way, is really neat). At 1250 yards, the delay is long enough that you begin to wonder if the bullet went 'poof', then you see the splash.

I never ever dial for wind, once my knobs are zeroed the windage is never touched, I use my reticle and hold, the problem with ELR(extreme long range) the conditions vary over the distance, I have seen the wind at the muzzle be dead, at 500 blowing from 3 o'clock, and at 1000 9 o'clock, a mile is another 760, by using the reticle and not dialing I can adjust for rapidly changing conditions.

I don't believe you'll have a problem! These guys do it quite regular with 130 year old cartridges and black powder using iron sights tang mounted!

I don't have my Sierra ballistics program running on this Mac machine but in their program under one section of it, the accepted formula for figuring the amount of precession required at long range always gave a bit of left windage to account for right hand twist. If you're fortunate enough to be able to shoot in a no wind condition, and if you're going to be able to set your target up at your shooting site, take some engineer flags and post them at a measured distance from the target and then watch your impact using your mechanical zero setting!

When the bullet is in flight a wind from 3 o/clock has a tendency to raise the point of impact toward 10 o/clock and winds from 9 o/clock move POI toward 4 o/clock. This is quite noticeable when shooting .22 competition outdoors! This is of course using a RH twist tube! ;D Precession/spin drift will be to the right using RH twist.

I would think that the error in Point of Impact at 1 mile would have Wind, Mirage,and the ES of your load in front of the error/drift due to spin.

True, BUT, from what I've been reading even if somehow you got those exactly right you could still be off by over a foot with spin drift and coreolis.

Not that I'd complain much just missing by a foot at a mile.

Yes sir...you're right! This is a very BIG REASON to make the time...and to take the time to pick a day (condition) when the wind is dead still to establish a NWZ aka No Wind Zero, with the load having been worked up to ascertain if it's capable of top accuracy accompanied by lots of trigger time to lay the foundations for going extra long distance. Many people lose matches because of one big reason...which you may well know, because they DO NOT KNOW their NWZ! My point being....is if all the necessary things have been done as I have mentioned.....the shooter has a good chance to observe the amount of drift at the target....if that is what one is attempting to find out about. ;D And regardless of who says what.....precession/drift is something that must be reckoned with at the extreme distances!
