Spider? Or what do I call it?

Grimstod

Ok so I know they are called spiders but they usually have 8 bolts. This one has 16. What do I call it so I do not sound stupid. Still the same thing? Spider? Or is there a name for the ones with 16 bolts?

A spider is a piece that is used to clamp on with the jaws for turning or boring soft jaws.
a cathead is the unit used to hold things and dial in parts like that one so I would call it a cathead
I guess a cathead could be used for the same thing as a spider so alot of people stil call it a spider.

That is not a rigid setup. I my opinion approaching dangerous.

I don't know if that fixture is intended for barrels, I hope not. In my opinion, too many contact points.

What do you intend to use this for? Action truing or barreling. It really does have a lot of stick out not a good rigid set up.

I think it looks good machine wise but you probably will have to put it on a diet and get your work closer to the chuck.
Looks like you could trim the end sticking out some turn it around chuck it up screws between jaws cut other end the same
or maybe cut one set of those screws off then it will be somewhat more of a rigid set up.

They will be. That i planned on from the start.
fyi, when I made mine, I got a cheap backplate from CDCo and permenantly bolted it to it. Mine is only 6.5" long, and has 3 sets of holes, but only two are used at any given time. I move them according to if I'm truing a long action or short action. For Barrels I use the long action holes.
Also try cutting 4 slots in it in between the screws with a 3/4 endmill so you can turn it with your hand when dialing it in.

HO-lee SHI-ver-IT!! That thing's scary on several levels! I name it "Death On A Stick"

IMO get the back turned down to go inside the chuck, maybe even the headstock spindle, at least bury it to the rear screw. Or beyond (you really don't need two sets back there) and at least that way it cain't flip out into your eye when it goes all wobbley.

Or cut it in half.....

And BTW 200RPMs isn't slow, in fact it'll hook you quicker/worser/badder than 1400RPM's cuz it won't rip out. It'll suck you clear thru the wringer, with just enough time to squeal

Grimstod im not telling you your fixture will not work. I made one years ago like Mike Bryant's. It's very short you only use the front ring To indicate your action in. This way you don't have the problems of inducing any deflection in the action.
