Speer Varmint Hollow Point Rifle Bullets .224 cal 52 gr

Anyone have any feedback on these? Before I trade I wanted to see if I could find some reviews. I'm considering them for either my 222 or 220 Swift.

Thanks,

I use them on 222. I find that they shoot accurately enough for PD and occasionally even better...and they open up well. Nice bullet when you buy in bulk. I got 1000 for $79 two years ago. I consider them a bargain at $115.

+1 on Coyotefurharvester's comment RE: use in a 22-250. They are accurate out of two of my guns. However, they do have a low BC. But I can clearly hear the smack on impact from 300 yds away on prairie dogs.

It's been my goto bullet for coyote hunting for a long time. I use it in my 222 Rem, 223, 5.6x50R Mag and 22-250. It seems to work well at all velocity levels. It and the 40gr NBT are the about the only two bullets I load any more.

I recently shot them on a prairie dog shoot from my 22-250 1:12 Savage. While they are not as accurate as the 52g Sierra match bullet it is much easier to spot your hits because of the spectacular damage they do. Most shots were 200-350 yards.

Good varmint bullet. Check the BC as compared to your other bullet choices - as most Speer hollow point varmint bullets have HUGE hollow points. For me, I'd use them where most of my shots are within 300 yards or so. Beyond that- there are other choices with much better BC. They are accurate.

The long shank allows seating closer to or in the lands when throat erosion or excess FB exists in a factory chamber. They work well in my custom 223 and 222 Mag barrels, and a factory Savage 22-250 barrel.

Speer makes 2 different 224 52 gr bullets, a flat base and a boattail. The 1035 mentioned several times already is the flatbase with a big hollow point. The other bullet, the 1036, is a target boattail bullet with a smaller hollowpoint. Long long ago, Speer also made another 52 grain boattail hollow point. Looked like the 1036 but was labeled as a match bullet, the Silver match. They would rival a Sierra 52 match bullet in most guns.

So which bullets are you looking to buy?

Frank

I like them in my 223. Shoot great and often don't exit. I usually call coyotes so my shots aren't ever farther than 250 yards.

A great bullet, especially in today's world of expensive varmint bullets. Very fur friendly on coyotes with a straight on shot or behind the shoulder. Out to about 300 yds or so they are like lightning!

Got out today after a long recess and they still get the job done. Full stock Sako Vixen 222 Rem 52gr Speer.

I shot the speer 52's in many calibers,

Swift load was 44g of AA2700, Rem case with 9 1/2 primer, touch the lands
222-19.5g of 4195, Rem 7 1/2
Touch the lands if you can.

I have graduated to the 52g Speer Match, which looks like a Berger 52 and a 55g Speer Hp, again a very, very accurate bullet. I suggest that you get some on Back order if you want them, about a 6 month wait.

Have to agree, had my first night with them tonight in a fire forming 223-AI load I only got out to 240yards but they were fast and accurate. I will say it was a calm night though so I can’t vouch for how they will be in the wind. Good penetration and explosive inside and I had only a 2 exits on 30 carcasses. This photo is of one around 165pounds at 180yards clean entry and skull was mush

Sorry should say that’s in a howa 223 AI 26inch barrel 1 in 8 twist with a fireforming load of 27.4 gns of ADI 8208 federal primers in Winchester brass
