Speer Bullets & .30-30 Win.

Hey, what are you guy's opinion on Speer bullets? We personally have never been able to find a load with Speer bullets that our guns like. I've got about 200 Speer .30 cal 170 gr FN bullets that I would like to reload for my .30-30, since I can't find any of my usual Hornady 150gr RN Interlocks in stock any more. Have y'all had any success reloading Speer bullets on 30-30s? Any advice or loads to share?

When I owned a .30-30 I used Speer 170 FN bullets with decent accuracy, as good as Hornadys and Remingtons shot - around 2 moa scoped. That’s plenty good for the rifle’s use. What doesn’t your gun like about it?

The Hornady 150's came around a month or so ago, but are now out of stock where I usually shop. The Hornady 170's are available from Blue Collar Reloading. I understand you want the lighter bullet, but $29.99 for those bullets is darn good. If you can, watch Blue Collar's inventory in the upcoming weeks. The 150's could come back around. I have not done any accuracy work yet with a 30-30, but the Speer Hot-Cor bullets are liked a lot by many. It could be that your rifle doesn't like them though.

I have a Winchester Model 94 "Trapper" (made in 1979). I haven't tried any Speer bullets through it yet, but none of our Marlin 336s liked them

My brother and I, "waaaay back", found Sierra .307"s shot better than anything we could come up with in our Winchester 94's than Speers. May not be such now days. Something to think about though.

After trying the FTX 160 30-30 bullets I haven't shot anything else. I did help my neighbor load some 150 fn Hornady for his 336, he has a shoulder problem so we used a starting load to minimize recoil. Scoped it shot 2" groups at 100 yards, he said his shots would not be that long.

Ive been loading the Speer hot core flat nose bullets but Ive been using the lighter ones, the 150s or the 130s. Haven't been able to find any in the last couple of years. My friend sometimes guides hog hunts when he's not to busy, he said he saw a guy shoot a hog dead at a little over 200yds with a 30/30 using the Hornaday leverloution bullets. He was totally impressed as the 30/30 is not noted for shots much over 150.
