specialization?

Is it better for a rifle shooter to focus on one event or acquire a wide range of experience?

Better to practice 2 things quite similar(ar tactical and f-tr) or fairly different(sling and br)?

Depends on your goals. If you want to be real competitive it's better to focus on one before attempting to branch to others. If having fun and making stuff go bang is the goal then do whatever makes ya happy.

Excellent question, should get a wide range of answers. Cross training is common for aggressive shooters and what you choose should enhance the other. Basically overtraining a weak side with a tougher match.

If I were going to shoot in 2 disciplines, I would do what Mike stated.. I am one to constantly try a variety of cartridges. This can and does equate to lesser scores than staying with 1 cartridge and learning it very well.. Whether switching back and forth from say Sling to F-T/R would help, I can't say. If one could develop habits that would compliment that other discipline that should help>>>But I could not say for sure as I shoot ONLY F-Open.. F-Open satisfies my desire for trying new cartridges all the time.. I would get really bored with one>>>>but my scores would be better!!

I guess I should give reference: bench guys use Fclass for wind skills and Fclass guys use bench for gun handling and accuracy testing. And so on...

We have a Jerry kloppel at St. Louis that shoots 9 disciplines and could / does win at anything anytime! He just won the rim fire nationals!

There are people who have a talent or penchant for something and it comes very natural. That fellow sound like he is blessed to be one of those fortunate ones! I might add that that does not absolve them from working hard at it>>>it just comes easier for them than others..

Ben, we call him the ever ready rabbit. I just met him Tuesday morning at the NBRSA nationals @St. Louis to hand him a barrel to chamber..., Wednesday evening he calls me to come get it. He didn't shoot Wednesday unlimited so instead of resting he chambered my rifle. Oh yeah, he's a gunsmith also!

i'm primarily a XTC service rifle shooter but cross train with Smallbore, rifle silhouette and some air rifle. as of late with the new rules allowing unlimited power optics, I have built a match rifle mimics my service rifle but with a larger caliber and higher magnification scope. having more magnification helps me diagnose position and shot delivery issues that I can't see with a 4.5x scope. I can then take that information and transfer it back to service rifle.

HI, just depends on you. I did rifle, pistol and shotgun and practiced for hours daily when I was young. I was dedicated to shooting and wanted to be the best I could at the sport. I lived out in the country which gave me a place to run around with guns and to shot every day. I practiced every position every day with my dads help. My dad was old school Marine and would correct any errors quickly with a swift kick or slap, it didn't hurt but I got the message! I good coach will help you a lot. Hope that helps you decide.

I shoot sling/irons and varmint prone matches and silhouette. When going back to sling I sometimes need a few extra warm up shots to get back into the groove, but I think it all helps each other. I will say that going rifle to shotgun is very different and difficult for me though, I spent opening day of dove season rifleshooting my shotgun and let a lot of birds live, Lol! Took me a day to get my shotgun eye and form back.
