Southbend lathe questions.

I bought the south bend Saturday off of the original owners daughter. The move went really good. We slid it in the bucket of my skid steer strapped lathe to the machine and drove on the trailer. Super excited to start cleaning it up and go though it.

What made the deal even better she told me to take a big Kellogg air compressor.

Thanks for all the information and help

Carl

I think you got a good deal. Had a similar thing happen when I bought my 12x30 gear head Hendey. Lady ask me to take a vise because she had no luck selling it. She said everyone who looked at it said it was too big!

So I am going Saturday to look at a 14.5” southbend lathe. It has only been used for home hobbyists by 2 older gentleman that pasted this spring. Hasn’t been used for about 15 years. Been sitting the house garage.

Wondering what I need to expect for on a old machine that’s been sitting for so long.
Cracked belts , rough bearings ?

It also has a d1-3 cam lock chuck system. I know nothing about that. Is this good or a bad thing ? It has a 3 jaw and 4 jaw from what I can tell in the pictures.

Little concerned that it’s only a 24” between centers machine. But I think it worth going to look at.
Thanks for any responses. Carl.

The D1-3 is the same as used on the Monarch 10 EE. Backplates are a little more difficult to get but doable. It's better than the threaded spindle in my humble opinion. The Short bed SB lathes usually were toolroom and if so should have come with a 5C collet setup and taper.

I called grizzly had a serial number card copied. The lathe was ordered new in 1952. Only had the upgraded spindle and steady rest as extra.
It’s been a lot of fun setting it up this summer. Ran all new 220 wiring with a main disconnect.
Put new felts and half nuts on also.
