Source for walnut laminate stock blank

I have an itch to do some stock work this winter. Anyone know of a company that offers laminated walnut blanks? my searches aren't turning up much other than flooring materials.

Shehane has their Tracker in Laminated African Obeche Walnut. There is a blank for sale on this forum. Nice looking stock. Greg turned me on to them with a picture of one of his rifles.

Bob, I was thinking more along the lines of something like the old Acra Bond stocks. A blank made from fairly thick slices of walnut. I have a sporter stock made by S and K that's like that, only it has a couple layers of carbon fiber in it. While I don't need the carbon fiber, I'd like to have some of the good looks of walnut and some of the strength of a laminate. Not sure anyone is selling such blanks, though.

The stock on my XR100 has some serious tilt built into it. It's one of my favorite pdog guns (14 twist 243 #6) and deserves a better handle. I can't swing an axe quite like preacher, but what the heck.

Why don't you make your own blank? There are a number of lumber companies in Pennsylvania that sell kiln dried and surfaced lumber by the board foot. You could glue it up and start making chips. Pick up a copy of Fine Woodworking Magazine or similar and there will be a number of sources listed. If you can find a local WoodCraft store they may have what you need in stock and do any milling that is beyond your capabilities.

look at my work. I make rifle stocks using colored laminated birch blanks.

Slight correction. My stock was directly from Doyle Anglin.

The big question that I have is what is the supply of blanks like what with the Rutland plant burning down.

Search on ebay for nice planks. 4/4 thick, epoxy them together, then you have your blank. Nice thing is you can position the grain or figure how you want it. I have done thise many times. Tip, mix some epoxy and paint it on, let it cure before you do the final glue up. Otherwise the wood grain will soak it up and dry out the joint.

These stocks are African Obeche. The "walnut" is the color

If you want to perform the work yourself, check with some of the companies who supply bowyers with the veneers they use. They can cut the laminations to the size and thickness you want. They also have some very nicely figured domestic and exotic woods.

Gents,

I appreciate the responses. Life took a turn after I posted this up a couple years back. I have a project on my hands that consumes too much of my free time to take on carving a stock for now. It's a good thing, but it will be another year or so before I have time to get back to this idea.

Again, thanks for the replies.

Might want to look at Richards Micro-fit Stocks out of Cali , but be prepared to do a lot of finish work , and some fitting .
