Source for a .010 over rem-age nut?

Without doing the threads it is a crap shoot, and if you figure out that you have a problem after you have fitted the barrel, you will have to start over if you want to fix the problem. A friend had done several rifles without doing the threads, just doing the face, lug seats, and lugs...that is until he did one particular action. He struggled and struggled to get the rifle to shoot, going over the bedding, working up loads and so forth. Finally he checked the threads by making a false tenon with shoulder that was a safe but snug fit. leaving it in the chuck, he screwed the action on, when the action face (which had been properly squared to the bolt raceway) came in contact with the false tenon's shoulder, there was still a gap on the opposite side. The threads turned out to be cocked and off center to the point where the threads had to be cut .025 oversize to clean them up for their full length. Obviously the existing tenon had to be cut off an the barrel rechambered. Luckily there was enough meat on his barrel to allow for that. If there had not been, he would have had to buy a new barrel. As it was he was out all of those components, the barrel wear, trips to the range and so on. All things considered, if you have the budget, it is generally better to sell your rifle, or action and put the money toward a clone, which should be straight and square enough as is. My friend does his own work, so he fixed his action and went on.

The follow on posts have convinced me that "truing" the threads to the bolt/bore line is the correct thing to do with an R700.

If you haven't started, I is worth comparing to a clone action that would already be true.

So Larry, how about a "how to" on laying out a stock blank and then turning it into a rifle stock,,,,,,,,,,, without the aid of machinery..... Dent removal from shotgun barrel? Metal prep and operation of bluing tanks? Guild quality, not some hack job. Installation of an OS hand in a S&W "L" frame, timed properly of course. While we're at, what would need to be done to fit a OS cylinder stop to a "K" frame Smith if it need fitting and a std cylinder stop wasn't right , either. What is the minimum amount of barrel wall to be left when drilling for sights (bottom of the hole to groove)? Firing pin protrusion on a quality made shotgun? There's a da&# sight more to "gunsmithing" than being able to chamber a barrel and glass bed it into a fiberglass stock someone else made! And about all you can do is touch on the high points of that in a weeks (or 2 weeks) time........
I have no idea what your trying to say
Why would someone want to spend that many of hours makeing a stock . For insurance reasons alone why would someone take the risk on takeing a dent out .Blueing the EPA made that a no no . Hands guns is not nothing I would care to do . 65 years ago I made fireing pins For very expensive shot gun
It was all I could afford I worked all summer to buy it . Common guy Not a lot of skill is needed to do gun work . Common machine skills is all it takes . and desire to do it . The good ones pay attention to their quality .
When it all said and done barrel quality and good reloading a skill shooter wins . Larry

If all you can do , Larry ,,, is chamber and glass into a stock someone else made, you can't do and don't know how to do 1/8 of what a real 2yr. school trained gunsmith can do! EPA =_no bluing shops,,,,,, wrong. You've never seen the add(s) in the classifieds in the "American Rifleman/Hunter" or heard of 'Glenrock Blue' as well as several others? EPA may make it more involved, but not impossible. Who would pay for a handmade stock? There are probably several on this forum who have and may, again. Not a thing wrong with raising a dent in a shotgun barrel, insurance wise or any otherwise,,,,,, as long as you know what you're doing! Repairing a handgun? People pay good money NOT to have to send their revolver back to the factory but still have it put back to factory specs. People also pay good money to have them modified. And it's now obvious,,,,,, you want to be called a 'gunsmith' and give advice because you took a short course..... In your mind, all it takes is "machine skill". That is so much BS, Larry!

How about for MONEY! It is work you have to love doing, to do! Another point, if you can work from a blank pre-inletted stocks are a lot easier than many make them out to be,,,,,, as long as the pre-inlet is a 'good' one (meaning the person with the duplicator has good patterns and has developed the skill to operate the duplicator).

Get him to explain how to convert a standard cartridge to an AI by hand. And he's worried about liability.
