Sorting new bullet jackets

Just purchased a large quantity of J4 bullet jackets. I have time on my hands due to COVID. When sorting, what is the most important measurement, TIR at the pressure ring, weight, or OAL. I have measuring equipment capable of reading .00002 in wall thickness and .002gr in weight. Thank you for your input.

Well as a novice with that type of lab measuring equipment you should find some that are exact then get some a little bit out and see if it mattered. As a bullet maker youll have to shoot all day every day testing bullets seeing what mattered and you have to have the capabilities and equipment to see if a lot can shoot zeroes or theyre bad enough to shoot .050’s at best

20 years ago, when I first tried my hand at bullet making, I made a pretty neat little rig that made it reasonably easy to ascertain the wall thickness variation in J-4 Jackets. I was looking for .0002 and under.

At one of the Midland Matches, I told Cecil Tucker about my efforts and his response was......”you must have way too much time on your hands”. I asked him what he considered the most difficult aspect of bullet making, and he said....”getting the lid off of those darned buckets.

His point was, just core seat ‘em, point ‘em, and shoot ‘em.

I did a lot of testing back then with my Rail Gun, and learned he was right.

I am making my own 30 caliber 112’s now, an the single most important thing I have learned is the importance of getting the core seating operation down pat. I get the core seat pressure where I want it, and then go up on the punch size until I see a little scraping in the jacket. Since most bullet jackets seem to average about .0003 in wall thickness variation, you can control the Lead bleed buy easier.

Just my option based on a rather short foray In 30 caliber bullet making as of yet, irregular bleed by is a accuracy killer.
