Sorting Center-X rim to ogive

Sorting the current lot I have with the best tuner setting I found so far shot several 5 shot groups in the low 1’s. Unsorted ammo often had one round that was a bullet width or more away from the group. That is too much variation. The gauge doesn’t measure rim thickness, it measures from the front side of the rim to the “ogive”.
So far I’ve grouped the ammo to length, eg, all 25 or all 26 lengths. I found the tune that shoots both these lengths the smallest. Not enough experience yet to distinguish 0.001” difference in length, probably never will.
I have sorted and test shot the same lots. Before sorting, the shots out of the groups were deemed to be me or a missed wind change. The issue first surfaced in a lot that varied from 23 to 29 on the gauge, fliers were greatly reduced shooting the same length.
Ive got a lot more shooting to confirm the value of this kind of sorting but so far I’m encouraged to continue.
Forgive me if you already mentioned this, but are you measuring from the cartridge “base” or the the inside of the rim that would index on the barrel?

This looks to be an Interesting gauge. It sounds like you use it to find the seating depth of rounds that your rifle likes. And then look for other lots with similar seating depths. Would this be true?
Yes that is the idea behind using it. using the gauge really showed why some lots were just plain junk as the lengths were all over the place one lot had 5 different lengths. my best shooting lot is so consistent in length I find maybe 2 or 3 that are different in a box and it was only 0.002 different.

I tried to find this gauge on the Neco site and had no luck. Is there a part number or specific name for it? Thanks,

I’ve thought of making a tool like this before, then I shot some center x and the accuracy met my needs. Now I’m interested in finding other Ammo that shoots as well or better due to availability if not for accuracy. I’ll revisit Ammo I tried before when I make the tool.

The tools I made for the bullets I make are similar and is why I was curious what rimfire folks are using for datum.

No photos, so apologies to the picture readers;)

I used a 22 barrel liner and cut off a piece 2" long.

Reamed one end like a long chamber to drop a round in and measure rim thickness.

Short chambered the other end using a basic "match" 22 LR reamer and use that to measure base to ogive.

Can be used either with calipers or mount a dial indicator in a stand to use like a snap gauge. I prefer the the dial indicator because it is consistent light pressure, not enough to damage the leading edge of the band on the bullet that touches

This allows sorting for headspace and engraving depth with the same tool.

Sort by weight and call it good.

You might want to give Gerry a call,(860)354-7500, and ask him if the tool takes 3/8" shank diameter dial test indicators. Nice fellow, loves to talk.
i would have to text or email.. my hearing is such that most times.. it is very difficult to be able to talk to someone on the phone.
