SonDay GunDay Story -- Kelly and Charles

No that's not a typo. Every Sunday we feature a rifle and a shooter in our Sunday GunDay showcase. But this week we featured a father and his 4-year-old son. So I modified the title to be "SonDay GunDay".

The father is our long-time friend Kelly Bachand, whom you may have seen on the Top Shots TV show. Kelly is an outstanding Palma (Fullbore) sling shooter, and a very bright fellow. He's now an electrical engineer with Aerojet Rocketdyne.

We think you may like this story -- and it may make you think of good times spent with a son (or daughter) at the range. Those moments spent together are precious, and create memories that last a lifetime.

Like Father, Like Son...

Great story on the main site. A little ass chewing time, folks we all need to stop being so involved with our own scores or group sizes. Everyone needs to get off their asses and take a kid shooting. Pretty sure everyone of us knows a kid that would absolutely love it. Whether it be targets, steel, tin cans or a turtle infested pond. They are our future, they are the future of our sport and they will be the future defenders of what we all love. I see too many shooters so involved in their discipline that they can't see the opportunity to be a mentor and coach. IF we overlook the youngsters in the pursuit of our own ambitions we not only fail ourselves but the kids too.

My 16 year old grandson asked if I would take him hunting. He had never fired a rifle before. He came up to WV from FL for our late deer season. I had a blast teaching him to shoot and then to be patient and quiet. We had a great time and he killed this deer with one very well placed shot from my 308. Good times

Back when she was about 9 or 10 (before i learned to hand load) we got every factory loaded 223 ammo that we could find and told her to shoot a group with each and see what grouped the best. After about half an hour I decided to check and see how it was going and I was told to shoot my gun and she would shoot hers. As we loaded up to leave I asked what did she find out. She says "Just about like you would expect, the most expensive ammo in the group shoot the best group." And she was right. Way to go Kelly!!!

Mentoring a child is both rewarding for the child and the mentor. It instills a life long interest in the sport of shooting and hunting. They are the future. It also gives your guns some place to go when your gone, that will appreciate them LOL. I am a fortunate parent with having children that love to shoot and hunt. I enjoy every minute I get with them teaching them different things when it comes to hunting and shooting. I had to throw one in of the barrel racing, they love that too!

Here here! I take as many kids shooting as I can find! Here’s my adopted son with his daughter when they came down to Texas. He didn’t take to college so I nudged him into the Army. He put in his 20 years in as an MP.View attachment 1270644
Beautiful site right there!!!! I have 3 daughters of my own. Retiring from the Marine Corps as well pretty shortly. Please let him know that I am proud of what he has accomplished for himself! The picture shows exactly why we do what we do!!!!!!

You have a really great point Downhill! Cant remember the last time I cared when a child I was teaching how to shoot, missed the target! I did not care about the ammo being used. I did not care about the round count on the gun. I cared about nothing other then that child enjoying themselves. My cares were no where near their joys!!!!

Have done many things with my life. For me, none of them compare with hanging out with my grandkids and the rest of my family. Enjoy the pictures of family range time and hunting trips. Memories will hopefully be cherished be all involved, forever. Spent ever chance I got to be with my grandfather, today, I am a grand father and hopefully my granddad enjoyed the time with me, as much as I enjoy my time with grandkids.
