Something I have learned...

I have come to realize that when I retire (rather if I get to retire) the only thing you will truly need is Bullets and Fuel!!! Just a little wisdom for future retirees. :o ;D

Not to burst your bubble, but you will also need powder, primers, and an occasional new barrel cause they don't last forever! Likewise brass needs to be replaced as well! Lol you better start pumping extra $$$$ into your 401k cause I can tell you Social Security ain't enough!!

Riverwolf you are funny.

To Americans
what is this social security you are speaking of?

non-americans
They will still get social security.

The retired guys I shoot with are still buying expensive guns. Not sure how they do it.

Medical insurance to supplement Medicare is a must, if you want to find care easily. Of course you may live in Vermont, and believe in the fiction of single payer. I'm hoping I can manage to sell my home and move out before that train wreck hits.

What I've learned as a "gray beard" is that:

1. The things you worry the most about almost never happen, it's the things that you never anticipated that challenges you.

2. The pursuit of material things does not translate to happiness; it's the events in your life that are truly memorable.

3. No rifle, no matter how accurate can overcome poor marksmanship.

The hell with dumping money into a 401K that might go south and leave u with 0000. Dump your money in brass and pills they only go up. Look at that gold cardboard stuff ;D ;D ;D ;D

When I retired I found out there still weren't enough hours in a day, but at least I was setting the priorities, not an employer. Still don't understand these people that retire and say they are bored and don't have enough to do, but thay probably don't shoot or run race cars in addition to the Honey Do list....

Well looks like I have some more to ponder on and learn...but I will keep looking for a way out of working even though I have a couple more years to go. Guess I should have said "shooting supplies" ...LOL ;) ;D

And a place to put said "supplies". We're fixin' to flee the not-so-Golden State, for good, hopefully next year. The final straw isn't the multi-billion $$ boondoggle known as the High Speed Rail, or the Democrat "super majority" in the state legislature, or that Feinstein and Boxer and Pelosi represent my interests about as much as the whacko in North Korea. Nope, it's that now some Forum members won't ship a break-open shotgun or merely bullets to Kalifornia. I'm tired of the prejudice, so we're getting out.

Back on topic. Cleaning out the spare bedroom, where I keep my "powpow" stuff as my wife calls it, makes me realize just how much space this stuff takes, and how much it weighs. Mamma mia, if I loaded up some of the plastic storage bins (black and yellow, available at Costco, Walmart, etc.) full with certain item categories, then I couldn't even lift them. The retirement place is going to have a lot more space, and I'm keen to figure out how to organize it when we finally get there. As to fuel, we're planning on that going into the basement and the barn and the shop -- none of which we've had before, so it's pretty exciting to a couple of suburban tract housing types like us.

Decided to take an early retirement in Feb. this year;) Kinda liking it 8)

Happy for you, and hoping to follow your example. Some oddballs where I work say "wow, what are you going to do, won't you get bored?". After giving them a skeptical stare, I say "You know that stuff you do in the evenings and weekends? The stuff you never have enough time for? We're going to do that, and more of it. All the time."

Seems to me the only ones who wouldn't be in favor of early retirement -- presuming your finances will enable it -- are the government, because they want your taxes. >:(

I've been retired 3 years and I still cannot for the life of me figure out how I ever had time to work!

My sentiments exactly. I retired in March 2007 at the age of 60. And there just aren't enough hours in the day. I have no idea how I managed to get anything done when I worked.

For the first 7 years of retirement, we lived in a 43' motorhome, living a month here and a month there. What a grand time it was. Anyone tired of where they are living might consider doing that for a few years. Then you will know EXACTLY where you want to plant your feet for the remainder of your years.

You guys are right, I can't believe I used to do everything I do now, plus toss in a 10 hour work day! There just does't seem to be enough hours in the day. I've got a new barrel to chamber and have't had the time to start it! I hope to get started on it tomorrow.
