something better than a 6br

Ok I know this post seems out of style. I own a 6br and I am VERY happy with it. I shoot F/open and have done well at 300yds with it. However, I just joined a 1000yd club and I am looking for something with a few new atributes. I want a round that does not give up anything to the 6br at 300 and that outshoots/outpowers it at 600-1000. Yes I know I'm asking alot. I am researching the 6.5x47 and 260Rem. I want good barrel life so I have ruled out eh 6.5x284. I heard the 260AI is very similar and tricky to load for so Im not sure about that route either? Others on my list are the 6x47L and 6.5x55.
Is it worth it to get away from the 6br for the money involved for any of the above? Or should I save my money?

6mm BRX.

You can use the same dies to load it with so cost is a minimum in the switch.

105 Bergers at over 3000 fps is competitive at 1K with a decent bbl life.

The BR just keeps on winning at 600 &1000. The dasher and brx are the only other two I would choose. I sold my dasher to make a 6x47-6.5x47 change bbl and wish I would have never sold it. I will still shoot my br at any 600 or 1000,

I know what your saying. I would like to avoid the more complex brass prep and custom die work involved with some of the 6BR wildcats etc. I really want something that I can buy a good FL bushing die and brass for over the conter and just start loading. I am willing to neck down say Lapua 308 brass to 260 or 6.5x47 down to 6mm but i don't want to get much more involved than that. I'm trying to stay away from potential brass issues, complex fire forming, and loading problems. The 6BR is so easy to load for I think I have gotten spoiled on it. I have heard such good things about the 6.5 class of rounds that I would like to try one if its not too much trouble.

i'm playing with the '6.5 HABU' -a 6.5x08 with a tight neck and the shoulder moved to 30 deg. [like the 6br]

so far it's showing great promise. loads - 140 & 142's -VARGET, H4350 & RL-17.

so far - 600m - varget/h4350 & 142 [mid 2800 fps] mid presure rg.
shoots waterline. rl-17 & 140's shoots 1 1/8m higher [mid 2900's] at 600m shoot waterline also.

moving the shoulder forward gives you about 20-23 thou. more case.

don't know if the rl-17 load will eat a throat or not - given the 6.5x284 going mid 2900's blowing throats about 750-900 rds.

i am a firm believer in running the bullets at about mid 2800's give yyou great throat life and gives away very little to the 284 in wind punching ability. bye the bye - the dif. in elev. at thou is about min to min&half between the two.

last match of year is this week [except for PHOENIX in DEC.] so some testing is in order - after pheasaant and duck hunting - before next year.

The 260AI is easier to load for than the standard 260 by a long shot, especially with 140 class bullets. It's far more forgiving on powder selection and charge weight. Barrel life is 2500+ rounds.

My vote goes to the 6x47lapua. I have been useing it for 3 years and with H4350 and a 107SMK it has shot well out to 1200yds.

My recomendation would be the no neck turn 6mmBRX. Dependent on the rate of twist and round count you may be able to run a 6mmBRX reamer into the same chambered barrel and set it back with minimal work. If not I would recomend a 30-2' 1:8 barrel.
I have gotten better velocity out of Broughton's 5C,baarrels but Bartliens, Kreigers, Brux, Rock Creek, and Harts have all be good too.

New Lapua Brass, Varget powder, and Wolf SRMP or Remington 7 1/2s, or BR-4s. Berger 105s and Sierra 107s are the most popular.

The only change you will need is a body die that can be a 6mmBR body die with the top end removed or use a FL 308 sizer with the decapping pin removed.

Just back out your 6mmBR dies .098' and and your are set.

Look at the John708 6mmBRX post along with many others on this site. Your homework has been done.

There are many fine choices out there but this one has the following:

Inherently great brass: Lapua 6mmBR

Great bullet selection, Berger, Sierra and others

Most effecient cartridge: easy to fire form, accurate enought to shoot in matches out to 600 yards during the fireforming stage. Easy on barrels 3000 plus rounds barel life. Low recoil and good to 1000 yards. Do the math it shoots within inches of the 6.5 X .284 with reguards to the wind, holds elevation great.

Buy 200 pieces of brass and it will last the life of the barrel.
With your dies set correctly and not shoting too hot of loads you can easily get 15 reloadings. Fire forming with 30.0 grains of Varget and full power loads of 32.2-32.8 you should be able to achieve 3020-3080 fps a great accuracy node for the 105- 107 bullets. Case stretch is minimal so trimming and anealing is only needed once or twice during the cases life.


The only difference in the 6mm BRX and 6mm Dasher is the shoulder angle any you will have to have custom dies made. Both shoot great.

I may not be completely up to speed on a Dasher as I am just about to complete the fire forming. I called Sinclair and ordered a Redding bushing die and a Forster ultra seater. Both items were in stock. Unless there is a huge difference in the custom dies, I cannot see that a Dasher is that much harder or expensive to get up and running. As far as the performance, I could not be any happier with the fire forming loads.

The 6BRX or the 6 Dasher are the way to go. You want find a round that will do it all from 100 to 1000 yds. You can load both with factory dies. Nat has covered it.

I have done it. I went from the 6BR, looking for something more, tried the 6XC and came back to the 6BR and 6BRX. Don't waste you time, money and barrel. Go with one of the 6BR IMP you want be sorry.
